Nice! I don't totally get the connection myself, but if this helps you remember that äo means "under/below", then awesome

In meteorology the arctic oscillation is often just referred to as the "AO" and when the index goes negative it means cold air can come south better, so it can help the temp drop "below" 0F for populated areas in the mid latitudes, ÄO=below (0)
