There was something weird that crossed my mind last night that's kind of silly but I was wondering just how many pretty reflective dots do You think Neytiri or any Na'vi has?? I don't mean just on their face but there whole body. tell Me what You think. I est. they have probably 200 to 250 total.

It's probably like freckles or, in the case of na'vi, stripes, and varies greatly between individuals.

Some Na'vi seem to have far more (Mo'at being the obvious example) than others.

they seem to get more dots as they get older. But what's interesting is the Elder Na'vi don't seem to get any wrinkles Mo'at in the saving Grace scene for example accept some on Her face that is.

They seem to all have different patterns if You look closely You can see that Mo'at's dots kind of have the same pattern as Neytiri does

I think the pattern and the point are in the dna of Mo'at, and a part of Eytukan and they have inherited this to Neytiri... For me is this the most logical explanation?!

Yeah You're right, it must carry though their DNA.

They actually aren't freckles, dots, or spots.
They're tiny organs called photophores; they carry out chemical reactions that produce light. Thus, they produce light, not reflect it, and are true bioluminescence. Each photophores is like a tiny sac full of fluid, some of the components of this fluid are what conduct the reaction. The chemical reaction that happens in earth organisms that can bioluminesce consists of a pigment molecule called luciferin and an enzyme called luciferase. The luciferin reacts with oxygen, and the luciferase is a catalyst; it speeds up the reaction. When the luciferin reacts with the oxygen, electrons in the luciferin become excited because they absorb energy, but then some of them lose that energy, which is emitted as light. The organisms that can do this have adapted ways to control the reaction as a means of communication, and can display different signals depending on their mood. The Na'vi are no different; their bodies display some nonverbal communication via changes in light emitted from the photophores, and they use the same type of reaction (something + something = something else + light), but the molecules their bodies use to do it would probably be different, because they evolved on a different planet, and the chances of arriving on the exact same chemical process is astronomically slim. And yes, the placement of the photophores would probably be hereditary, because whether or not a predator can see you at night changes when you're covered with glowing spots and you're in the middle of a glowing forest. Also, I do not know if this is canon, but I recall hearing that the photophore pattern is unique to every individual, and when two individuals mate, their photophore patterns change to form a combination of the two patterns. This would make sense, because before the Na'vi evolved, became more sophisticated and formed a society, it would be an easy way to tell mates apart from others if their patterns looked the same.

Thanks for the info!
I could see how they evolved the photophores as cameo to blend in to the forests of Pandora, As for the them Mating causing the patterns to change I'm not sure if it's canon ether but it could be. I just think it's cool that James basted some of the stuff on Pandora off of a lot things on earth
