Especially given his intention for the movies to have an environmental impact - "Nah, none of that is that important, it's all just a dream anyway"

The only time the "it was all just a dream" really works is when they put an unexpected twist on it (The Matrix, certain Doctor Who episodes, among others), but Avatar isn't really the kind of movie that lends itself well to those kind of story elements.
