I think part of it comes from the "touch it and you'll go blind" line from the tech when Jake is in the Avatar compound which is very close to that classic urban myth. Combine that with the fact that they are never specific what the queue and tsaheylu is I can see how uninformed or inattentive people could misunderstand.

Plus it a very, very easy joke.
