Should the Avatar drivers totally integrate into their Avatars?

I posed this question to some people in Florida.

If you were an Avatar driver, would you want to transfer your consciousness into your Avatar permanently as Jake did at the end of the movie?

The main advantage as I see it to doing this is you have the freedom and mobility to travel on Pandora without a breathing apparatus. Also, you're physically larger and stronger and you would probably be more accepted by the Na'vi.

The main disadvantage as I see it is you had two bodies and now you have one. If you don't do this and your avatar dies, then you still have your human body like Max and Norm do.

The flip side is..... you need to take care of and maintain two bodies. As we saw from Jake, that's not the easiest thing in the world to do on a full time basis.

I think the main sticking point would be the fact that you would never be able to leave Pandora and return to earth.

While I'm sure that some people would have no problem with that I expect many others would be reluctant to do it.

I don't think they can return anyway. They would have something far worse than any danger Pandora could throw at them back on Earth.

The utility of this respawn token is dulled quite a bit by a couple factors. One is just the life support matter facing the human species on Pandora. The other is the well-known psychologically devastating results on people who have driven for years, possibly gone a little or a lot native, experienced the mental freedom and unity of having the neural hardware to participate in Eywa and then had their avatars killed in accidents or suicides and never replaced i.e. Hegner in Project 880. The Na'vi -> Human reversion does not work out. I would rather just be flat-out dead if it came to that.

As to returning to Earth, should one desire to do so from within the present circumstances of the Pandoran humans from the end of A1, that requires a chain of events to happen involving the establishment of relations between some Earth-based nation or interest and the people of Pandora, and furthermore the availability of the interstellar transport infrastructure to actually travel to Earth and/or back to Pandora. As it stands, this is likely at very least several decades away simply based on everything prewar being solely a RDA private venture and no governmental power on Earth having ready capability to reach Pandora. Seizure of RDA assets postwar in the ensuing investigation is the most likely direction for this to go. All of this will take time. It may not be within these people's lifetimes that Earth is within reach. Thus it becomes a near non-factor that a Na'vi (i.e. avatar, hybrid) body might for example preclude the use of cryo facilities, and much more of a factor that going that route enhances survivability and quality of life on Pandora.

I wouldn't risk visiting Earth so soon after the war as an expat anyway, even if the law were clearly on my side - at least not without some very good body armor. Crimes targeting whistleblowers and opponents of extractive industry have happened in the past many times.

I def. would pick staying a Na'vi and would give up the human body, the Earth in the 2150's sounds like a desolate, bleak place anyway. And I would have no desire to go back, as for having two bodies, frankly I wouldn't want to mess with it if I could just be Na'vi, not only that but machines are machines and there will be glitches from time to time ( especially if they are not able to be maintained as well as when the RDA was running things) and I would not want to be on a hunt or something and then my Avatar to get disconnected or something. If I had the chance to be a full Na'vi I would take it without hesitation

there is no returning to earth and a life/future for the scientists/drivers who stayed behind as the defeated rda/secops forces were forced offworld and eventually back to earth. Selfridge and the rda management would make sure every scientist was labeled a traitor and threat to rda and earth, no going back ever. why would anyone ever want to return to that 2154 nightmare anyway, overpopulation, resource depletion, masses run by corporate decrees from a trump-like figure, so much planetary devastation ugh.

the scientists should seek a way to make the Eye of Eywa transition so they can continue to use their Na'vi bodies in pursuit of pure science and also find ways of using their knowledge and intellect to facilitate the cleanup of Pandora, from the 30 years of rda pollution and environmental destruction and desecration of Omaticayan scared sites like the Tree of Voices. do what is right, and at least bring some measure of redemption of the human species in the eyes of the Na'vi People.
