Give it another 10 years. VR will fill the niche, and once that happens I think living room 3D will make a quiet comeback when OLED is more mature tech.

It took me a long time to be able to afford a 3D TV, which is why I didn't buy one 8 years ago, and bought it this year because my old TV was dying and I couldn't pass up on a $3999 TV that was one of the last 3D TV's produced on sale for $1350. I knew that this was probably my last chance to buy a 3D TV to be able to watch Avatar at home in 3D. I am by no means rich, but admittedly in a much better financial position now than I was 8 years ago due to sticking to a budget, paying off debts and working pretty much 7 days a week.
Looking forward, if we do get all 4 Avatar sequels, the last one is due in 2025 if I'm not mistaken. Imagine what kind of tech we'll have in our living rooms by then. Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality are just getting a foothold now, but will have improved (and hopefully gotten cheaper) by 2025.
Imagine donning a VR headset and becomming totally immersed in Pandora!!
