CHAPTER 6
It was three in the morning in Washington DC when the phone rang. Jack Beeman mistook it for his alarm and hit the snooze button. When it didn’t go away he figured out, and after accidentally mistaking remote control for the phone, he picked it up. “Yeah?” He asked groggily. “I don’t care what it is, its 3 AM.” The man on the other end kept talking. “Okay, fine. I’ll be at the office in a half hour.” He staggered out of bed to the kitchen and started a pot of coffee. By the time he finished his shower the restoring liquid was ready. He drank a mug quickly and filled his travel cup. He stepped out of his apartment and locked the door, then walked out to his Mercedes. He opened the door and climbed in. Ten minutes later, he was at work: the Washington Post. The guard buzzed him in and he took the elevator to his floor. He walked over to the glass door captioned “Ron Lewallen: Editor.” He didn’t bother to knock, he just walked in and crashed on the chair. “What is it that’s important enough to get me up at 3AM?” Ron slid a photo across the desk to him. “That.” Jack looked at it. “What? Some hoax? Some guy in a costume? Don’t we have anything better?” Ron shook his head from side to side. “This is no joke Beeman, its serious. That photo was taken an hour ago… from Pandora. I pulled every connection I had to get it. We’re breaking the story. Us, a newspaper! Not CNN, not Fox. I need you to write the article.” By 5 AM the newspapers were printed, and distributed. Across the nation, every commuter who picked up the Post was greeted with the headline “We Are Not Alone” and the first image of alien life. - Shatnerpossum
