James Cameron' screenplay, "The High Ground," was intended as the first sequel to the biggest blockbuster of all time, Avatar. Discarded in favour of other ideas, the original screenplay is being adapted into a three-part graphic novel series.

It has been almost a decade since the humans were forced to leave Pandora - but now they're returning - with an armada of heavily-armed starships! After years of peace, Jake Sully has settled down with Neytiri and raised a family, so for him, the stakes are even higher than when he first went to war against the corporate might of the RDA.

Adapted for comics by award-winning author Sherri L. Smith (The Toymaker's Apprentice, Orleans, and others), and illustrated by Brazilian artist Guilherme Balbi, Avatar: The High Ground, Volume 1 - Advent to War ventures into all-new territory in the Avatar saga, and is a direct prequel to next year's release of the film Avatar 2!

So if I'm understanding this correctly, it was supposed to be the sequel, but instead it's a lead-up to the actual sequel.

No idea. Haven't heard anything about it and a brief search turns up nothing much.

It briefly popped up again a few days ago, I think it was originally scheduled to come out in Late Jan. But when the sequel was delayed to 2021, it must have been postponed as well but some sites pulled the trigger for the original date still by accident. (Just a theory)

There's some news coming out occasionally through Jon Landau's, James Cameron's, and Avatar's Instagram pages. News now is that everyone's relieved principal photography finished for 2 and 3, and now it's just effects, which are being worked on on schedule through zoom meetings between the artists at home. So as far as we know, the pandemic won't affect the release of the second and third films.

i couldn't find anything on the Avatar IG or twitter that had 'The High Ground' as a title or art. you can see deleted entries on the older IG pages in 2018 and 2019. on twitter, deleted tweets only show up in the current year, everything earlier is archived to the account's user page.
