Default Questions

So I've just come here from the "old forum." Already this place looks amazing... I sincerely hope that we can rebuild the community we had in the old forum. Watching the old forum broke my heart, but seeing some familiar faces here has helped some. I have a few questions though:

How are we going to keep the sense of community here? What happens when we start seeing a lot more people joining? It seems like it would be hard to keep a close-knit sense of community going when you have thousands of active members... It just seems like, unless we do something different, this place will go the exact same way the old forum did...

I'm sorry for being so negative, but the disintegration of the old forums was really painful... I would hate to go through that again

Well, for better or worse, there are a lot of people "in charge" over here. That leads to a lot more diversity, and with control spread out, it's less likely one or two people can drastically change the direction of the place. It's inevitable that more people will join, and that's not a bad thing, but I'm guessing this will always be smaller, more intimate community.

And yes, the negativity that broke out on AF was terrible to watch, as those forums pretty much saved my sanity when I found them after PAD set in on me. I hope that our newly formed official friendship between the two sites ensures that something like that never happens again. I think the entire community will come out the stronger for it.

I give Lon to fix AF a week or two. The User Interface is bar-none the worst thing I've ever used on a forum. Let alone destroyed my home . I'll see that he rebuilds it right, or there's hell to pay!

It is a very good question. Sometimes I wonder how welcome I have been. I usually attribute it to the wide gulf of years that separates me from many of the members. It's a bridge I try hard to cross, but on occasion I just feel that I'm not making it.

I would say that we have to have a lot of acceptance. How are you going to choose who comes. It is up to all of us to to maintain the sense of community. This place is what you make it. We have a lot of work to do.

I know what your talking about but just like any forum related to a fan base movie eventually breaks down in spirit since people get bored talking about same things over and over.

This forum will try to defy that but it will eventually happen as well.

As far as I know, even the moderators took this issue with Lon, but he refused to hear any of them.

Apparently he and only himself likes the new look lol, not to mention that his running annoying google adds and gets money from that.

I doubt he will change anything soon.

Is it possible there be a "Plot/Script Discussion" section also? Because I wouldn't like to see everything Avatar-related all lumped up here in "General". Plus I was thinking about reposting my "Eywa Theory" thread here, along with some of the holes figured out to add to the OP. That had some good exchanges.

The recipe in my opinion is simple: keep it as a place run by the people, for the people. That's how you keep a community happy.

Don't worry, it won't happen here, it can't. We specifically made sure of that when we founded this forum, that nobody has control and is unquestionable, and we founded this forum on what everyone wants. Everyone here is dedicated to keeping these forums friendly and together, like so many of us can remember from the 'old' AF
