I want to see this movie. I have read several reviews of it on Amazon.com and most of them were positive. My brother and two friends of mine who have seen it shudder when I mention the movie. My question is and please be honest...just how violent is this movie? To get some idea of the sort of movies I have seen and have enjoyed here are some of them:
Braveheart (this is still one of my top favorite movies of all time) Gladiator (loved it) Saving Private Ryan (very good movie, I saw it in the theatre and didn't blink once) Black Hawk Down (saw this in the theatre too...) The Passion (granted, I flinched at several parts..in particular the scourging scene. I admit that I can only watch this film once a year) As you can see from this listing, I have watched some very violent movies and have had no problems for the most part. Is Apocalypto as violent or more violent than these? Why am I asking this? Well, my brother felt that he needed a barf bag (he also felt that way watching Black Hawk Down and the Passion) while watching it. I don't think I will need a barf bag but I would like to be fully prepared before seeing it. What do you think???

It's very violent, like a combination of The Passion's gore with Braveheart's warfare ways of killing. Human sacrificing is present, and many of the deaths aren't simple. Slitting throats, being bashed in the head, chopping off heads (though you don't actually see them being severed), many many spears, mortal wounds that last a while, etc. Many different horrible ways of dying are portrayed.
I still thought it was a fantastic movie, though, just because the story enveloped all the violence and gore. Even my younger sister, who hates over-done violence, loved the movie too. You come to love the characters. That's the thing with all of Gibson's movies with violence: no matter how much he puts in, he still manages to make it a great story. There are even parts where you feel like you want some of the characters (bad guys) to die a violent death (I did, at least). Last edited by Woodsprite; 04-13-2010 at 09:35 PM. |

Another vote for it being very violent. I liked it. I may be too much for some.

The most violent thing I saw apart from the sacrifice was when the panther attacks one of the men and also when another gets impaled on a trap that Jaguar-paw (the main character) sets..
Apart from that expect lots of arrow and spear wounding.. The movie isn't much more violent than Gladiator and Braveheart

It's very violent and not in English. I was confused by it but I've only seen it once, I didn't bother to try and understand it.
I'd say 3/5 to Mel Gibson

It's a good thing that it isn't in english..It was in a mayan dialect, used still by people living in Mexico and Guatemala (Yucatec Maya language - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) I think it made the movie more accurate and believable..Like the Na'vi speaking their own language instead of english which would of ruined it. You should try to understand it, you would enjoy it more

Yes, very gory. But its the sort of violence you can see coming, giving you plenty of time to hide behind the pillow.

I saw the movie last night
. My husband and i enjoyed it. The gore isn't as bad as I thought. Yes, its gory but none of it is gratuitous. It doesn't look that much different in terms of gore from Braveheart in my opinion. I enjoyed it. It had a good story and I loved how it was made such as the costumes, the cinematography, the makeup, the sets, etc. There were only two flaws and some inconsistencies in it. I thought that Gibson should have used CGI for the Jaguar. It didn't look right. Also, its fine to have a solar eclipse but don't have a full moon in a few scenes later especially since they are supposed to occur on the same day..lol. There were a few other historical inconsistencies but that's about it. Over all, very good movie .

By the way, did anyone notice that the music played at the time when they are about to get sacrificed is very similar to Avatar. Horner did the score for both. |

I noticed some similarities in the scores. I love them both.
