Default link time... hmm i was wondering....

maybe i have missed something. but i was listening to avatar movie while painint last night. and i listened to the scene where grace asks Norm how much link time he has.

question in my mind starts to take form.

Norm has a lot of hours on his account.
link=into avatar=very personal, so i might assume that he has linked into his own avatar.
later it is said to norm: you remember!

in the beginning norm said: they fully mature on the way to pandora.

can it be that Norm has spend time in his avatar while it was a little child? And that he experienced in the movie his first time in his full grown adult avatar? while it might have been small and childlike before during his initial link time?

i might have missed that in the books or where it could have been mentioned, but this was just something that crossed my mind last night.

in the movie you see small avatars, so i assume they start like an embreyo and than grow. and if so, when will they be ready for the first link?

I think that maybe it was like a virtual reality thing. Where the go and "link up" but instead go into a virtual reality like thing perhaps?

I agree with FoW, although I never thought of linking with an ungrown Avatar, I guess it could be possible. Maybe linking while it's still in the tank, just to check that the avatar can be linked correctly and to train the operator.

virtual reality.. sounds very possible. i think indeed that that is what it was.

Though, if virtual reality was easily doable, why hadn't Jake had *any* linktime?

I would assume because Tom died right before the ISV left. So there wasn't really any time for practice.

Jake says Tom gets killed a week before they leave. I'd guess that week could be better used telling Jake the very basic things he needs to know rather than advanced link training.

True, and it also depends on how easy it is to use the virtual reality in 2154.. I'd say 10 minutes training in the VR would be essential before giving access to that "insanely expensive" body

Jake seemed to have no problem learning though

Jake does say 'but I read the manual' which implies some training on using the link, although probably just the basic what to do, judging by his unfamiliarity with it.

I remember reading somewhere that they first experimented linking with chimpanzees and condemned criminals. Now -that's- twisted. If that's the kind of link time Norm has had... oh it makes me shudder
