Star Trek Sequel Shooting In 2011; Avatar 2 Sequel Straight After?

Rumours and reports had suggested that the new Star Trek film would be going before the cameras by the end of the year, and that it was going to shoot before Avatar 2. According to Saldana, though, that's half right.

She told MTV that Star Trek is set to go before the cameras first, and that "I do think we are going into pre-production this fall, to start shooting early next year. And I have a feeling that Avatar is going to happen right after."

It sounds like Saldana could be in for a busy time, given that the schedules of the films mean she's likely to jump from one to the other.

While I would much rather see an Avatar 2, I really enjoyed the Star Trek movie. I am not a trekkie so I just saw it as a great movie and I would love to see a sequel.

Exactly, people like HNM should appreciate the reboot to the series, otherwise Star Trek would have died a dark death.

I'm a Trek fan and thought the new Star Trek was a decent movie. It's nothing like, say, The Next Generation (my personal favorite series), but it was a good action movie that was fun to watch and didn't mangle Star Trek too badly. (HNM's going to kill me, but ... Nemesis anyone? Someone who calls LaForge an alien, refers to phasers as "ray guns," and even considers killing off Data [especially in such a pointless fashion!] doesn't have the right to write a Star Trek movie. )

I think that the 2009 movie served partly to bring Star Trek back in the public eye. I loved everything about previous Star Trek series -- the characters, the advanced civilization (a maturer version of humanity that could actually serve as a role model), and so on -- but it's safer to bring out action/adventure films with lots of combat and special effects. I liked the eye candy, but I'm hoping that they manage to bring back in those aspects of the show in the sequel, now that they've captivated a new audience.

'reboot' - I'd like to reboot JJ Abrams in the balls for that.

Nemesis, well, I did hear about all the fail around it, but did enjoy a lot of the actual film, just not the ending. Sure, it's the weakest of the TNG-era films after Insurrection (now there's an overrated one, and it's not even that liked ), but the TNG era was the best Star Trek has ever been. TNG is my favourite of the TV series, and my favourite of the films is First Contact.

I see what you mean, and I agree with you, but I'm reserving judgment until the sequel comes out. I don't like the idea of Star Trek turning into Star Wars I-III (the plotless CGI spectacles, not the original movies), but as I see it the new Star Trek didn't go nearly as far down that road as it could have and there's still a chance they'll make something good out of it. I'm trying to be optimistic here, I guess... but if they turn the sequel into nothing but 'explosions in space' you can bet I'll be at the forefront of the angry Trekkie ranks.

I can't really remember the rest of Nemesis -- I hated the ending so much that I refused to watch it again -- but I do remember enjoying some parts towards the beginning. (As far as I'm concerned, the ending never happened, and I never saw much point in rewatching a movie that just ... stops ... in the middle. ) As to TNG, I agree. It's by far my favorite series. If only the general public was of a mind to watch that sort of television! Alas, we're stuck with reality TV instead...
