Yachats huh? Yeah, that's pretty far from where Drewan is, and the Redwoods and Crater Lake are. I, on the other hand, will be driving directly through there at some point. As it stands now, I will basically have August 14-16 to spend on the Oregon Coast, or wherever in that general area. That's Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.

OK. On the Avatar front, assuming the re-release happens before those dates, the closest theater is in Newport, pretty close at around 20 miles. The closest 3D capable theater appears to be in Corvalis, which is 76 miles away. Considering I'm driving well over 10,000 miles on this roadtrip, that's nothing to me.

If you can get away for a couple days, the main parts of the Redwood Parks area is about 200 miles south of Yachats, a somewhat slow but dramatic coastline drive of probably 4 hours. Getting to Eagle Point, where Drewan is, would be roughly the same distance and time, with another hour or so to Crater Lake. My vote for someplace to be outdoors would have to go with the Redwoods. Crater Lake is one of the heartstoppingly dramatic beauties in the world, but once that is done, the park does not have much in the way of trails or hiking. The best parts of Redwood, on the other hand, are pretty much Pandora without the bioluminescence and thanators

I don't know if Drewan could feasibly do a Redwood visit if it was on the weekend? Crescent City, the main town in the area, has a theater, but I doubt there is 3D. He has already said that Medford has a 3D theater, so if we met in his area Avatar would not be a problem. And there is plenty of great forest and waterfall scenery in his area, its just not quite the Redwoods

Then again, if the re-release is not out, then none of that theater stuff matters and we have to figure out how to watch Avatar somewhere. Anyway, that's enough for this post I think...

Woooowwwwwwwwwwww excellent info!! I'm a bit gutted I'm so far away though. Crater lake sounds amazing... As do Redwoods... ok ok ok well I guess we just figure out where everybody is, and I wonder how soon we'll be able to find out if there is a re-release or not...

Anyway. Plans are in fruition, and I'm definitely getting more and more excited. Going to book my plane tickets tomorrow

Well, look at it this way. Compared to the distance you are traveling just to get to the US and Oregon, none of these are very far at all. At the very least, I'd say it's safe to say you'll get to meet a true Avatarian finally

Sounds like a plan! I don't think I can come to this meetup (I'm in California, but I'm not independent -- I don't have a way to make it to Oregon or Montana on my own), but I'll hopefully be a bit more mobile for future meetups. I'm definitely going to be there for Avatar II! In the meantime... if anyone happens to be in the Bay Area, let me know!

I'm up to the Redwoods at any time.....It's the nicest part of the West Coast---Bar none.....Yea, Corvallis is a bit far for a weekender for me....There are several good beach sites between Gold Beach & Brookings--GREAT place for a lunch...

I'm at work right now, so I'll think & talk more tonight---about 5 hours from now....

Cheers!!!!

Oh and I just looked at a map. Wow. I'm really far away. I'll be staying in Yachats, and working in the Siuslaw National Forest. Uuum hmm. Like I said I'm sure I can take some time off. It's just that I've pre-paid the motel so yeah no refunds on that, and my budget will be quite tight (conversion from $NZ to $US is pretty killer ), but hopefully hopefully HOPEFULLY (all my fingers are crossed) we can work something out. All your ideas sound awesome, even though I know nothing about any of the places you guys have mentioned I guess that's half the fun for me though, hehe.

It's about 2 to 2 1/2 hours from where I live to Brookings--between Brookings & Port Orford is a nice section of the coast. All up'n'down with little parks every couple of miles. I'm fond of a small park that is up-coast from Brookings---Whale's Head Cove--hard road to go down (was damaged about 8 years ago & never really repaired) so visitors are light...there are several nice parks up from there---Port Orford looks close to where you are staying....

If you have the time, Crater Lake is a "must see" place---I agree that once you see the lake there is not much else to see/do--I like taking the hike down to the boat ride on the lake--quite a cool experience--it is a Volcanic Caldera after all & the colours in the rocks just under the surface are amazing. Talk to you soon!!!

It really is amazing and is worth the drive. It's a worthy destination if you can make it.

You are headed to some beautiful country and if I encourage you to get out and see as much of it as you can.

I wish I could. I'm 1400km away by Los Angeles. I wish I could take the long extended adventures, but I don't think it will happen. Now I'm going to cry...

Don't cry!!! Avatar meets will happen all over the place I'm sure. I just really wanted to ensure one happened while I was overseas

We will work out an amazing itinerary of sight seeing that also includes one or more Avatar viewings as well. If there is one thing I am good at, it is planning travel in these areas, and stretching my money absolutely as far as possible

And I home-base here so I do see it working--I'll make sure my wife is cool with over-nighters so lodging should be good--figuring the time-table is going to be the sticky point.....

We've got a couple of months so the kinks should be ironed out.....

The way my itinerary is looking now, I would be into Yachats either the night of Friday August 13th or the morning of Saturday August 14th. The rest would depend on how far Autumn wants to go, I guess

My ideal idea would be to drive to your area Saturday morning, be there by noon or a little after, hang out some, and go see Avatar for an evening show, assuming it's been released by then. Failing that, watch it at your place maybe. Stay at your place if possible, or somewhere cheap, then go to Crater Lake Sunday morning. Spend the day there, you could head back home and Autumn/I can stay somewhere north of the park. Make the drive back to Yachats Monday, seeing waterfalls/forest along the way. Be back in Yachats Monday evening, so only one missed day of volunteer work.

That's just a first idea. I suppose the Redwoods could also be done in a similar way, though it would be farther away from your place. I'm already going to be paying for lodging all of these nights regardless, but nothing is prepaid, so I can cover whatever, wherever people end up staying. In the scheme of my massive road trip a little extra spending isn't going to matter much.
