Yes, well keep in mind that Cameron is a professional diver so he took a lot of inspiration from what he had seen in his own dives. Not too mention a NASA consultant which explains the very feasible design of the ISV. That is also why it comes as no surprise that he consulting on the design of a 3D camera like the ones used in the film for use in Space.
