Fear not. Sure, there will be toys, but the process of making the movie is so expensive I doubt we'll see degrading spinoffs soon, and with JC's attention to detail, I have a feeling he'll guard his baby a lot more energetically than George. And there really isn't that much of an opportunity for toys aside from the RDA stuff and figures. We'll see plenty of print matter though, and the spinoff novels are probably well underway. That's my opinion, anyway. But you know American society, though. Gotta have lots of STUFF!

In terms of cultural impact, I want Avatar to be every bit like Star Wars. Today you can say "Luke Skywalker" or "Darth Vader" and everyone will know who you are referring to. If Avatar makes it to this level the same could be said of "Jake Sully" or "Neytiri" years from now.

I think that fate is pretty much a lock, only on a level of dignity a few notches higher.
