Do what I do, ignore the merchandising and the rest of the crap. At least you can keep it from losing it's message for you.

Does it really matter? So what if there's merchandising and all that crap for Avatar, just do what Grif said, just ignore it.

Avatar is a movie for you, not anyone else. As long as you keep the movie special for you, no amount of franchising or merchandising will ruin the movie for you.

Quality rather than quantity, I COMPLETELY agree.

(Also, Avatar > Star Wars )

Stars Wars was a set of two plots. The Republics destruction, and it's rebirth. Avatar was a tale that goes against impossible odds for a cause. One is alot more powerful than the other, especially if you yourself believe in that cause.

I'll be so, so disappointed if this is the direction that Fox studies takes with Avatar, assuming they own the rights to do that sort of thing (I'm certain they do).

I think it would too greatly dilute the message and meaning behind the film. Busts or something- yes. But brand new annually released toys and spin off movies? Please god no!

Very true. One reason that Avatar is so powerful is that it is very personal.

It is about normal people fighting for the people they love and their way of life.

Star Wars was much more abstract with important people (i.e Jedi-knights, Queens, Princesses, military commanders, Sith Lords, etc) fighting "for the Republic" or "against the Empire" or even "Democracy?". In effect, it appeared to be more a high level political power struggle between the elite rather than a fight in the interests and freedom of the average citizen, especially in eps 1-3.

In fact, with SW (1-3) it always struck me as unclear if the war against the separatists was justified. It felt like the heavy hand of the Republic was forcing worlds into a Union against their will. In some cases, that was surely undemoncratic, which is ironic since the Republic was supposed to be pro-democratic.

To summarize my feelings on this:

GOOD:
Blu-Ray
Toys
Accessories (backpacks, DO WANT)
T-Shirts
Pro sculptures
Books
Re-releases
Posters
3-D
Games (story, graphics)
Documentaries

BAD:
3 different Blu-Ray releases
Cheap, ugly, flimsy toys
Accessories (official *unrelated product here*, not so much)
T-Shirts (Seriously, a bit more subtlety. I would like to be able to wear in public. )
Not-so-pro art depicting Na'vi as furries.
5-year-old story books (It desensitizes them to avatar in the future, when they can understand the message)
Re-releases (wait, where did the nipple go?!)
Posters (can I have the other half of Neytiri? pleeeeeeease?)
3-D (expensive for home. must wait a while to save up lots of $$$$)
Games (bad AI)
Spinoffs (shudder)

I thought you were talking to us for a minute there Cyan what with cosplaying and what-not.

But seriously, I agree. I'm kind of sad to see Avatar milked the way it is at the moment. The last thing we need is over-saturation.

I don't want Avatar to become cheapened by a ton of flimsy merchandise. I wish they had waited to release the blu-ray so that it would be able to contain all the other goodies. I don't like having a separate one that is a special edition. Toys are ok I guess.

Were like the Aztecs. We have alot of gold and we use it for ceremonial purposes. Cortez comes along and we share it with him. Now he's taking all of our gold and hopefully doesn't kill us.. inside.
