Avatar Sequel to be Announced Within ‘A Few Months’ | /Film

DO WANT

Quote:
More or less since the moment that Avatar was released there has been talk of a sequel. Franchise potential was built into the story from the start. When the film became a staggering financial success, the talk only intensified, to the point where there has been word of pre-production work already beginning.
James Cameron spoke about 3D filmmaking at a technology forum in Seoul, South Korea recently, and said that a release date for the Avatar sequel will be announced “in a few months.” He also talked briefly about how long Avatar 2 will take to make.
The AP reports on Cameron’s talk, and says that the director estimates the sequel will take about three years to make. That’s a year and half less than the active time required to make the first film, but likely takes into account the fact that much of the technological heavy lifting has already been done

Great news. I am expecting a theatrical release of holidays 2013, that is if they start fairly soon. If not, sometime in 2014.

The good thing is that like the article said, James Cameron doesn't have to wait several years just to create the things he needs to even begin filming. All the hard work is done now. The only thing James Cameron needs to do is create a story that is as good or better than Avatar, then they can begin filming.

I just hope that it wont be rushed! I would actually be happier if the release date was something like Holiday 2014 - Q1 2015 then 2012-2013!

Im not to worried though. James knows how to make perfect sequels better then anyone! ^^

Well, don't forget a lot of the work can be reused - much of the CG environments, the models, etc, plus the cameras and motion capture technology are all in place now, so it's going to be faster to make then Avatar.

I find it interesting that James Cameron will give us an exact date of the sequel's release. It's as if he already has everything down on a piece of paper with a schedule with dates.

Theres a lot of pressure riding on JC to get the sequel done and giving us a date would only pressure him more to finish it in time.

I can't predict the exact day of the release, but I expect it to either be sometime between October and December or on April 22.

I've noticed a pattern with James Cameron's most recent movies.

Titanic - Friday, December 19, 1997
Avatar - Friday, December 18, 2009

As you can see, James Cameron has discovered how successful the mid-part of December is for releasing a movie. During which time, there is a Christmas break that extends right through to the new year. This gives viewers plenty of times to view his movie(s) once or more times. Then, a few months later are the Oscars. James Cameron is smart for this.

So my estimation is that Avatar 2 will be released on Friday, December 20, 2013

I noticed this as well. The release date of Avatar was absolutely perfect. It was during the holiday season, before the Oscars, and there were no big movies for months which allowed Avatar to stay at the top.

...Nah. There were big movies like "Sherlock Holmes" and "The Book of Eli", and still it wasn't shaken. It stayed on top... on top of other big movies. That's how big it really was.

Now Titanic, that was a movie that had no competition up 'till May.

I have faith Cameron will make a sequel that will still blow our socks off even after the first Avatar... and I'm guessing by reading this news he's came to the conclusion he'll make Avatar 2 before any other movie he has in mind? This is ecstatic! I'm so excited!!!

Cool story bro
*rocks back and forth in anticipation for when the movie opens*

2013, come on thats really not as long as some expected, chin up it's Cameron.

It will be better than the first im sure, he builds upon his foundations, unlike some directors who either stay on the same level, or completely break the foundations upon which it was successful

Ohoho, this is such good news! I'm excited already!
The only thing is, I tend to be nervous about sequels, since they're often badly done. I'll have faith in him though, he's brilliant.

HMMMM! I'm glad to hear this! I don't think he will make a bad sequel, after all, he is the Avatar creator! And I don't think three years is a long time.. But waiting will be hard

Yeah, I really doubt he's going to make a bad sequel. Avatar 2 will be amazing

Also someone pointed this out too... Sherlock Holmes was released into theaters after Avatar was, and Sherlock Holmes was also taken out and released onto DVD and Avatar was still in theaters

Avatar is still playing in 3D at a theater about 30 minutes or so away from me.

Edit: Make that two theaters within 30 minutes from me.

Edit 2: Make that 5 theaters still showing Avatar. All 5 in 3D.
