Default P.A.D. In world history class

After I saw avatar and went Back to school I Started having Post Avatar Depression when I had world history class.
I saw how Violent and distructive recent humen history has been.
The main points:
The industral revolution- how human Greed became clear.
Imperalisum- How countries begain to encrouch and hurt the other nations for their own gain.
The World Wars- The killing of many people for gain of land and so much Hate.

When I have P.A.D, I just stare and sigh and think to myself.
"Why be on Earth and not Pandora?"

I understand where you're coming from, but I also think these are necessary evils.

-industrial revolution: made the manufacturing of goods far easier, creation of medicines and medical supplies greatly increased, longer lifespans. (Without the industrial revolution, you can bet we sure wouldn't have the tech required to say, make the Avatar movie)

-imperialism: created some of the most successful and flourishing nations in the world, IE Rome(yes, I realize it fell, but for a long time it was prosperous).

-war: as much as people to like to say it doesn't solve anything, it often does. it's necessary to put destructive countries in their place and stop some of the evils that exist.

In summary I think the industrial revolution has done more good(for humanity) than bad, I feel that imperialism, while aggressive, has built some of the most successful governments this world has ever seen, and I think that war, while it shouldn't be required to solve problems, often is and does.

Yea... well... I still have P.A.D. regardless of what these things have done for humanity

I'm not saying these things are good, you know.

Also the Na'vi have warriors, and I'm willing to bet that it's not just because of humans, there's most likely been inter-tribe warfare.

Also, I'm sure there are a few greedy, violent Na'vi, it's just in that society they're the minority and are quickly weeded out, and in our society they're the majority and tend to have representation in the government.

mmm not sure about the greedy violent Na'vi... possibly there is a possibility I've never thought of it... but yes there is some clan warfare as stated in the Activist Survival Guide, but it doesn't happen a lot because of the plentiful nature and food

The only difference I see between humans and Na'vi is the belief system, their minds seem to work in a similar manner(wanting revenge, etc), so I'm sure that they have the ability to be greedy.

Yeah, the project 880 script isn't canon, but it is still the original idea for Avatar, so worth considering.

Humans do some really bad things, it make me sad too.

Txum kali'weya is right, all of those achievements have only solved human created problems. For each problem solved, people create another

QFT

"For each problem solved, people create another." I couldn't have said it better myself. I think it would have been better if humanity had never progressed. But I'm sure most people would disagree with that.

The industrial revolution solved what problem we created? If anything, it improved quality of life.

I had the same thing happen to me during my history class. I've tried to focus on the future more than the past though, it's helped a lot.

This thread is not meant to debate industrialism vs non-industrialism, or anything similar.

If you want to debate that, make a new thread in the debate section, not here.

Your feelings seem pretty understandable. When you take reality and compare it to a world like Pandora, the negatives seem to be even more apparent. As our societies have grown larger, the relationships between individuals within society changed. The Na'vi seem to consist of small societies of around 500 individuals. Drawing parallels to human societies of the same size, the interactions between individuals seemed rather similar. Behavior detrimental to society is taken very seriously because the society is at risk of collapsing, where as larger societies don't face as large a risk due to the actions of an individual. What would have been interesting would be to see how Na'vi societies interacted with each other (sorry for the digression).
