James Cameron says BP turned away his offer to help with Gulf oil spill

James Cameron, who knows something about underwater disasters, floated a "titanic"putdown of BP, calling the embattled oil company a bunch of "morons.”

The award-winning director of "Avatar"and "Titanic" said Wednesday that BP had rejected his offer to help fight the massive oil spill spewing in the Gulf of Mexico, reports Reuters.

"Over the last few weeks, I've watched, as we all have, with growing horror and heartache, watching what's happening in the Gulf and thinking those morons don't know what they're doing," Cameron said at the All Things Digital tech conference.

Cameron has done extensive work with robot submarines and underwater filming in his movies.

Earlier in the day he attended a conference with the Environmental Protection Agency and pushed to have the government get its own independent look at the leak.

"If you're not monitoring it independently, you're asking the perpetrator to give you the video of the crime scene," Cameron said.

Honestly though, it is a little embarrassing for them to have to turn to a movie director for help but imagine how good a name JC could make for himself?

While doing research for Titanic, James played a key role in the development of new deep water technology. He also went on many of the dives to the sunken vessel. He can be considered somewhat of an expert in this area.

Never heard of this, but Cameron's sticking his nose where it shouldn't be. Sure, he may've had experience with deep-sea work, but that's about it. He knows nothing of geology, drilling, or oil in general. Sure, it couldn't hurt to get him with the guys involved, but in my opinion they're just wasting time with him. There are already deep-sea experts on the scene; why bring in another?

What they need are more experts on drilling and the oil industry.

True, but honestly it should have been cleaned up by now. Sometimes u need someone to think outside the oil industry box to come up with a better idea, and let's face it, Mr. Cameron knows how to work under pressure. Wouldnt hurt for him to help out, or any of us for that matter. Its our planet and we should take care of it, regardless of a slip of paper.

Cameron has the experience of deep sea exploration and a very good understanding of science and technology so I don't see any harm in letting him share his opinions on the matter. Currently the best geologist and petroleum engineers in the world haven't been able to cap this well, it's getting to the point where thinking outside the box may be the only way. Who knows, Mr. Cameron may just come up with that one insane idea that works...

On this, there are no true experts. All the methods they've tried so far have been the first attempts at this depth.

Actually, we're forgetting The Abyss. Titanic was nothing compared to the technology that had to be researched and developed for that movie. Deep Core was all about oil drilling, the biggest difference being that the "platform" was an undersea habitat. Sure it was also a little space friends movie too, but there was a lot of wetwork involved, and Cameron is also a longtime SCUBA nut. He's no industry expert, but in the wild but practical ideas department, he's just the sort of dude that might nudge the so-called experts just a tiny bit outside their comfort zone and come up with the ultimate solution. I say...GO Jim, GO!!

I say the Feds and BP could use any and all help. I am sure they are just asking for advice and trying to combine best methods for continuing the clean up and the shut off of any this and any future disaster. Its about learning from mistakes, so perhaps JC has some insight like everyone is saying.

That video is a great find and pretty much squashes all these haters
