I think of the Matrix sequels as just a continuation of Neo's journey. After all, the writers are the writers, and it's their story anyway. It's like bashing the Grimm brothers for something they did hundreds of years ago to some of their own tales.
Same with JC. If he wants to go somewhere with Avatar that some people won't like, so be it. He's already alienated millions of other people who already hated the first one. He expected rejection from some. A little more isn't going to change his mind.
