I think the bond formed to fictional characters have an essence of being strong because we are introduced to so much about the character in a relatively short amount of time. The audience gets to know the character rather intimately right away, while relationships in reality do not form at such a fast pace. Basically what Devourment and others have said.

I agree. People who have witnessed or experienced traumatic events can suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). I would also say that experiencing the death of people I know in reality (especially deaths of a violent nature) has had much more of an impact than deaths of characters in movies or shows.
