Ok, today I had an epiphany... Long ago, I asked myself why are Na'vi blue? JC did say that it's only so they don't look cliche, but I thought, there MUST be some deeper meaning...
Today in my language class, we discussed symbols in poetry and some of them are colors. What does blue represent?

Blue represents something that has an extremely high non-materialistic value.

Well, Na'vi are not materialistic people, they take only what they need, right?

Blue is also a very calming and serene color. Cameron has said in interviews that he likes the color blue and that it is reminiscent of the color of some of the Hindu gods. Also the word Avatar means incarnation in Hindi I believe. That word is important in many religions, etc. So, there is deeper meaning to the word blue. Its calming, serene, etc. As for as non-materialistic, I haven't heard of that one.

It is ironic though. We have a blue atmosphere which is reflected in the water so it looks blue as well. Pictures of the earth from space show it with a blue hue as well . However, when it comes to plants, etc there are a few blue ones, usually flowers (no roses though ). Some animals are bluish in color or have blue markings as well, especially birds and fish.

i love the color blue, anything else on the Na'vi I think would not have done so well. plus it kinda helped in keeping the Na'vi hidden on pandora when they are hunting i think

I remember Cameron saying something like "Well 'little green men' was already taken, and the Simpsons have yellow, so I went with blue."

I think the Hindu gods connection is interesting especially considering the many meanings/origins of the word "Avatar".

Agreed. It's a neurological thing. Seas are blue, sky is blue, and when you look far away in the horizon, everything slowly fades to blue. I couldn't imagine better color for the Na'vi.
