I originally posted this elsewhere. Just posting it here to raise awareness too.

There are a couple of other related links in the articles: http://trueslant.com/johnmcquaid/201...ar-no-fantasy/ http://www.nrdc.org/energy/coal/mtr/ The pictures are really depressing. |

I've known about, and even seen firsthand, mountaintop removal mining for years. It's yet another in a depressingly long line of horrible things we do to our planet every day. How these things are allowed to take place is beyond belief.

No matter the damage you cause, if you can pay the bills you're on your right to do it

I hadn't even heard of this
![]() There are just so many things going on in the world, I think it's impossible to know every one of them... And so many, like this, are just terrible.

Actually, yes. The electricity I use comes from clean nuclear energy. Coal is essentially obsolete.

Except for radioactive waste... but all in all fossil fuels are worse.

But nuclear fission - seriously - there are tons of radiactive waste in train cars, they get carried to Russia and stored there in a warehouse or it gets buried in leaky salt mines (I shamefully admit that the research institute I work for now participated in that in the past). Or Plants blow up resulting in people here not beeing allowed to collect mushrooms anymore and hunters are advised not to eat wild meat too much - and Chernobyl was not really in the direct neighborhood. If the wildfires reach the nuclear facilities they are heading for in Russia now, I actually get a bit scared again. Besides - Uranium mining is not so great either The only power source I have not heard too much bad about is solar, especially solar thermal electricity - and maybe geothermal if it is naturally occuring (and does not require fracking). But that also takes a lot of energy to build and maintain. The best option is to reduce energy usage - there is a lot of potential. But then of course people want to have air conditioning instead of fans and laundry dryers instead of laundry ropes and they want up to date gadgets that cost more energy to produce than a family can use in days (calculating all the resources and energies for a TV or PC for Example). Reduced consumption of energy and resources and products is required, but of course in the dominant economic system this is not desired as it is based on consumption.

There is a map of coal mines and associated article: Coal Controversy In Appalachia : Feature Articles (more pictures of mountain top removal, maps of the affected regions and prospective claims. And yes - it is not just a small locality - the map shows there are really large areas affected directly - and obvioulsy downstream valleys are affected, too)
