I don't want to be a purist but here goes.

People can't do anything with an IP address. The worst they can do (with success) is find out your ISP, host name, and the location the IP is hosted on.

They can't hack your computer. They can try but 99.99% of the times -- they fail. I know this and I hate it when people go like "OMG MY IP ADDRESS IS SHOWING!!!1111!1". But they can hack because your Firewall is open and you have open ports. Usually most computers warn you when your Firewall is open and most users do good and close it.

This myth of having someone's IP address was created as a "scare-tactic" in games from server administrators who collect the incoming IPs of players who join the game on their server. So if they messed up big time they would shout out "Hey player 1, I got your IP - don't mess with me or break the rules." Now a days you cannot see another person's IP because most game developers hide it before the vanilla software comes out. But for most popular games, that are not built by big game industries, that require a TCP Client/Server -- you can.
