Default Mother! (2017) eco-message drama by Darren Aronofsky

so i went to see this film with a friend, it was billed and promoted as a horror thriller, and it ended up being nothing of the sort. holy mother of nature, it was a theme drama allegory completely indicting humanity for what we are doing as a species, to this once great planet. the film has a bit of a religious theme, in that Grace (played to perfection by Jennifer Lawrence) is Mother Nature, her husband (Javier Bardem) is essentially God, Ed Harris is Adam, and Michelle Pfieffer plays a very seductive Eve. once the setting of the mansion is established as Earth, and the surrounding idyllic property is the Garden of Eden, it all goes downhill from there. the film is not religious by any means, but many moments of what the heck is wrong with humanity and it goes totally off the rails into the apocalypse and environmental disaster, overpopulation, consuming all finite resources, and eventually the meek mother earth totally having had enough of humanity. the ending is such a shocker, but oh so true.

i can see why religious types hated it, why horror freaks hated it, why studio-paid crititards turned on it, but the themes are right up there with Avatar and other eco-message films. go see it, but remember the allegory always right below the surface, and all is not what it seems. i'm planning to see it again!
