I liked District 9. I especially enjoyed the documentary style that it had at the beginning. It looked like it was a two hour special on CNN about the plight of the people in Darfur or Afghanistan, etc. It looked that realistic. Also, it was very realistic in what would happen if we had a ton of alien refugees. Its based on what people have done to others in the past. Think South African apartheid or rounding up Jews into ghettos, Japanese in interment camps, Native Americans on reservations, etc. The treatment of the prawns is similar.

It does differ from Avatar in that Avatar had some positive human characters. There is still hope at the end. With District 9, there is honestly no good human characters. They are all corrupt and evil. Probably the only one that comes close to having any honor is the whistle blower who ends up in prison (he is the guy who was on the job for the first day with Wickus. You see him wearing an orange jumpsuit at the end).

Overall, very good movie .

Thing is, the alien race are animalistic and brutal, no better than us. It could have been improved, by atleast making the prawns a compassionate race. In a film where i dislike each character, all of them complete bastards in my opinion, it is hard to relate, it's a film that carries a message true, but it's not the nicest watch, it's just f this and f that, there is no dialogue what so ever.

To be honest I agree with Cyan, mostly. Especially when he says "it carries a message true but it's not the nicest watch".

As you can tell by my personality (or username) I like feel-good movies and beautiful and artisitc imagery.

It's a rather dirty, gritty, and rather disgusting watch. I'm saying it is difficult to watch the main character, a complete bastard, enjoying the pleasure of hearing the popping sounds of an alien abortion, it's a movie with a message, and i love that but it creates this message in the worse possible way, i'm not jumping up to see it again, it's played with unsavoury characters, not one single character i could devote my time to.

I'm not a troll, i see it's a good movie, but it disturbs me to a given point, most lieky because the message is so blunt.

Yeah the main character says f*ck weirdly! lol

But yeah I agree, the message isnt half as powerful if you dont like the movie. I prefer fantasy than reality. District 9 is saturated with this reality crap, I didnt really enjoy it.

Personally I hate movies that leave me in a worse mood than I was going in. Avatar was completely the opposite and one of the reasons why I love it so much.

It's got likeable characters and it turns any frown upside down!

^^ Man, when I watched Avatar I felt terrible. It definitely turns my frown into more of a frown. I kind of like it when movies make me feel bad, though. I'm not sure why...I guess it's because I "wake up" to reality and realize there are things that I can change...or something. Or maybe I just like going for an emotional ride. *shrugs*

LOL He does say "f*ck" weird! lol

Everybody is affected differently by movies. I for one left with a smile after Avatar (but obviously that did a 180 and turned into depression), not the same for District 9.

I dont hate D9, I just watched it once, said it was good enough but knew I wouldn't watch it twice.

Avatar is an emotional movie, but it has an overall positive spin to it and after all is said and done, I've always left the theater happy. Albeit with the feeling of certain sadness due to the return of this normal gray world that contrasts so much to the films lush and vivid colourful imagery.

As with District 9, the whole movie felt sort of repulsive with everything done over the top evil and gory sort of way just to make sure people get the message. I think some subtlety would have been in order, but that's just my opinion.

I agree with Cyan too. It seems to have the message: "We're all the same and we're all b@stards." Hardly, very positive.

Yes, Avatar was much more positive. While D9 suggested quite a pessimistic world (for both the aliens and humans), Avatar gives a positive message that we can all change and make a difference. People can make the right decision for the right reasons, although this can involve sacrifices (and Trudy is probably the best example of that).

In the end they are different movies, have different outlooks and different messages. For me at least, Avatar is better entertainment, more escetically beautiful and more positive making it more enjoyable to watch.

D9 was an interesting movie which does make you think. Let's face it the fact that it took place in South Africa was poingant. It was actually quite shocking to see those who only a couple of decades before would suffer under apartheid now proposing an apartheid system to keep the aliens separate, just showed how much all humanity is the same.

In the end I am like most here. It was a well-done moving which was generally interesting, sporadically entertaining in places, but which had the effect of turining off people from both alines and humans alike.

i'm a bit of a D9 nerd so I would know this but, the prawns are actually a very peaceful race. The reason why they are seen as primitive is because most of the aliens that came down were the workers. It's believed that the prawns have some kind of hierarchy in terms of their society. So the story goes.... their planet had some major disturbance (war, disease... who knows) and their queen died so these workers who can't think for themselves come down to earth. When us humans pushed them even lower within our society, they turned into savages. However, there are a few bright minds, Christopher who is thought to be a "scientist" or one of the "leaders" but no one knows this, hence his plan to escape. So it depends on how you view each person in the film. Are they the animals for being out of control or are we the animals for doing such savage things to them? You saw the whole film yes? If so then you would have saw that we were experimenting with them just so we can use their guns---> to kill more people. I really think Wikus redeemed himself in the end. He didn't make anything better, just fixed what he screwed up.

*BTW the shacks that were used for the film are REAL HOMES that belong to people. This film is actually partly based on what the director, Neil Blomkamp, expirienced when he was growing up in Johanesburg. And there really was a place like D9 for the black people back in the 70's in Capetown, District 6. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/District_Six,_Cape_Town This movie really is amazing

Christopher is the name of the alien that starts up the ship and escapes? Nice, that's my name.
