Avatar was my first 3D movie (I saw it twice, first in 2D and then in IMAX 3D). I remember thinking that the 3D was well-done, although it was disconcerting at times (e.g., when a leaf is sticking out at you but ends abruptly at the edge of the screen), but I've not seen any other 3D movies to compare it with.

I saw a 3D film ages ago when the IMAX opened. It really wasn't that great.

Avatar is the first good 3D film

No. Defiantly not. Let's see there was Spy Kids 3D in red/blue years ago (not sure why I ended up going to it) and I saw Coraline in 3D (polarized). I'm pretty sure there were other movies as well.

Haha, I saw that. Actually, only a few years ago, too. Sooo bad.

Before Avatar, I saw that 'G-Force' hamster ninja movie in 3-D. XD
Reminds me, I've been meaning to see Clash of the Titans and How to Train Your Dragon as well.

I thought the 3D in Spy Kids was OK, but that's probably cause I was still a kid back then. But as for my first 3D movie, it was the Shrek 4D attraction at Universal Studios. Another movie I saw was Beowulf in Real D which was also pretty amazing. But Avatar is definetly the best 3D I've seen so far.

Avatar was the first 3D movie that actually worked for me! I had gone to see other 3D movies before, but they never worked because of the stupid red-blue thing and me being colorblind and it just...failed. So I gave up on 3D movies for a while. When we went to see Avatar, we saw it in 2D first, but when I went to see it again, I saw it in 3D because my friend wanted to and I was like "alright, I'll just deal" cause it always looks a little weird when it's 3D but it doesn't work for me. But, they had since updated the 3D technology and it was the first time it worked for me!

So no real non-red & blue cheesy 3-D prior to Avatar for most people? I guess I wasn't as blown away by the effects as some people because I'd already seen something very similar. It definitely wasn't Pandora, but I did really enjoy the 3-D in My Bloody Valentine, it made it an experience akin to something like a fun roller-coaster ride. I can't imagine the impression Avatar would have made on me if it had been my first 3-D movie!

Edit: Not really related but the guy I saw the movie to watch said he agreed to act in the movie because he, an aspiring director/film photographer was really fascinated by and excited about the the new 3-D technology. From how excited he seemed about MBV, I can only imagine what he'd have thought about Avatar XD. Probably "O.O *choir of angels sing*" lol

Here I have to buck the trend. I've seen Avatar three times in 2D, twice in theaters and once at home. (So far!!) I did see it in 3D once, and that was my first 3D experience. It was a huge struggle. What did work was astonishing, but for the most part it was a bear to focus on anything solid. I don't think I saw it in the "right kind of 3D." The glasses were battery powered and activated by the screen. I know they were working 'cause I took them off and the movie REALLY looked bad. I was pretty disappointed, and I will try again if I can find a theater that uses the polarized, disposable glasses. I understand that actually works better. Opinions welcome....

Wow, battery powered 3D glasses? That must have been an extremely old (and outdated) theater.

Next time Avatar is out in more theaters, you can check for showtimes here:
Avatar (2009) - Movie Showtimes and Tickets - Box Office Mojo

Just fill in the information needed and hit "Submit".

Battery powered??? How strange. That would suck. I'm very picky about my movie going experience and something like that would irritate the hell out of me! Here is a picture of what the real-D glasses looked like (I actually "stole" two as souvenirs, one from Avatar, the other from MBV3-D, lol):

As you can see, nothing too complicated there. It's too bad your 3-D experience was so crappy :/. Maybe if you see it in IMAX this August it'll be a better one

Yeah, the RealD and IMAX 3D systems use polarisation (horizontal/vertical for IMAX (which is why you can't tilt your head too far there or the 3D effect goes), and circular for RealD), but IIRC, a few cinemas did have Avatar in other 3D formats.

Yeah, I remember that from 3D I saw before, it had objects zooming right at you and hovering in front of you, which just makes you think 'hmm, 3d'. It was very subtle in Avatar, which just added to the realism.
