Default How music affects emotions. Really good article.

Hey I found this really good website, one of the articles talked about how music and emotions are interrelated. Here we are:

My sister has a book called something like "Your Brain on Music" and it looked like a really interesting read. Something you guys might want to check out

Wow great read! Indeed, music really really connects with my heart and soul in so many ways. Music is a very big part of my life, the techno/trance/electronic/rave/dubstep makes me want to get up and dance like no other, and some movie soundtracks bring me unexplainable and inexpressible emotions, some that can be unbearable, but it hooks me and puts my heart on lockdown, and takes me on an amazing trip

Music is a huge part of my life, if it was taken away, my life wouldn't be the same

I've known about this for years. I think this is also why I like many different forms of music since each of them have helped me at various times in my life.

When I broke up with my ex-boyfriend about 9 years ago, I entered a very dry period of my life. I needed to free my mind and let go of my pent up angry feelings. So, I was listening to Korn, Metallica, Led Zeppelin, Papa Roach, Linkin Park, etc to get me through it. It helped tremendously since I was able to free those feelings I was having. In addition, I also got involved with some anime at the time. I didn't need anything that was taxing on the brain or emotions.

Other forms of music help fire my imagination. Much of the ideas I have had for my fantasy book have been from when I listen to Celtic and folk music.

The really bad periods of my life were spent listening to some awful pop music of the early 90's. I admit that even to this day I don't enjoy that sort of music probably because of the associations I have in my mind toward them. A little bit later, although I was still depressed, I started to listen to grunge and classic rock. I still enjoy both forms today.

I never got into rap very much. However, when I met my husband, I started to like 70's funk and some r & b.

There are some songs that will take me back to certain times in my life. The funniest juxtaposition is Hotel California by the Eagles, Waterfalls by TLC, a Gangster's Paradise by Coolio, When a Man Loves a Woman by Percy Sledge, and American Pie by Don McLean. All these songs take me back to my senior year of HS, trying to sleep on a cold bus (because somebody was always stupid enough to keep the window down in the middle of autumn ) on our way to and back from marching band competitions. Several of my bandmates would play music and you guessed it.....those were the songs that were played most often.

Now, certain other songs remind me of my husband and our relationship. We have several "our songs", one that he wrote himself (the chorus is in my signature) and some others like Always and Forever by Heatwave.

Music is our life's soundtrack and thankfully will always be with us in some form. There are so many associations with songs as well as other stuff that triggers one's memory such as smells. The memory that I have of those senior year band competitions also brings back the smell of mowed grass and cigarettes on a cool autumn evening in Kentucky mixed in with the sounds of other bands warming up. Those were fun times .

A lot of music gets me emotional. The one song I will never forget is "Fix You" by Coldplay. It was the first song I listened to after I saw my grandmother pass away in her room at the nursing home in 2007. She succumbed to Alzheimer's disease. Music is the only thing that keeps me calm these days.
