Hmm. I understand Eltu's reasoning, but this will be funny.

The human and the other animal both have the exact same right to live.
I value them exactly the same. Therefore I could not tell, in theory, who I would save. If that would actually happen, I would be forced to make a choice based on who I could most easily save, not based on what species they belong to. All life have the exact same right to live. Be it a human, an ant, a wolf.

In a purely evolutionary scenario, it would make more sense to save the animal, since animals do not endanger our status, because they cannot compete with us in our environment. Every time a human dies, everyone else improves their odds of survival, since there's one less to compete against. A rather harsh interpretation, but it's still true to a certain point.

Aquaplant, we've moved a bit beyond that. At least in developed countries.

I'm not sure what interpretation you got out of that, but I can assure you, that competing for resources has never gone away despite the changes to our lifestyle over time, it has just changed to different form.

If my neighbor meets an unfortunate end I am no better off. In fact, I'd be worse off.

Point.
But we both already have jobs... so...

I can not turn my back on humanity. Even though there are alot of dumb, selfish, evil, etc people in real life, there is also alot of good in the world as well. I'm not going to reject who I am.

Well, like I said, that was only an example. Think about whatever you might want, that he might also want, but only one of you could have it. The less people are after the things you want, the more likely you are to get what you want.
But enough with the topic derailing. |

Depends who the human is. In general, I'd save a sentient being over a non sentient one, but if the human was one who just deserves to die (there are many such people), I wouldn't.

May I say that no matter what they've done, nobody deserves to die.
And sin, may not be the proper word. Believe me, you can not have been righteous and caring every day of your life. You see, we are like the parents, overseeing everything, and humanity is the child. Going to a distant planet, leaving your race behind, that's like abandoning a naughty child just to adopt a better behaved one. Seriously, no one I know personally would leave humanity, and abandon Earth.
