So, has anyone actually been to a place that has been virtually undisturbed by humans?
I have. Opal Creek, in Salem, Oregon, is a large forest that was going to be turned into a mine about 100 years ago. The miners built a small settlement and looked for copper (IIRC) but never really found much. They fell in love with the natural beauty of the area and decied to live there. Then, a logging company (back before there were so many rules regarding logging in Oregon) was coming in to start clear-cutting, when all of the miners stopped them on a bridge leading to the area at gunpoint and held them off. That's what I was told by the park staff when I went there. I went there for a class in my Freshman year of college, and the class stayed there for a couple of days to conduct field studies and enjoy the area. It was absolutely massive; many of the trees were centuries old, and you could still se the places where the mine was going to be set up but never materialized. Anyone else been anywhere like this?
