Like this analogy... drinking coke from a can, and then a glass bottle... you can just taste something better when drinking from the glass bottle, but then you drink from a can, its still good, but theres just something about the taste of the bottle...

CDs are the can, vinyls are the glass bottles (in case you didnt figure that out haha) another DJ actually told me (quick note while on vinyls) well asked me why i still use vinyls, vinyls have no value and are on the way out its all about MP4 media... and I looked at him and was all, "are you serious... keep thinking that when you're mixing music with a stupid computer dj software" stupid computer DJs haha

anyways back to computers I'll take a picture of mine when I get home =D

Ironic, as everyone I know uses mp3/ogg on a computer to DJ, even funnier because the music is very different and usually far less computerised to begin with
The reason vinyl is falling out of use is because it is impractical, low quality, degrades over time and with use, and creates all sorts of background hissing noise, which I know some people like, but most people really don't. There's a reason tapes aren't used any more, and CDs are just about hanging on but are becoming a lot rarer now. Plus you're limited to a much smaller collection of music and it's a lot more hassle to change things around. Most albums that are released on it are bought by collectors which is fair enough, but I would bet 99% of it won't be played.

Thats the thing lets have laptops software mix for us for Gods sakes. You're a DJ you should feel the music, not let a software tell you when to start mixing. (matter of opinion like stated at the end)

False. Vinyls actually have great sound quality. CDs are compressed music onto disks, but vinyls have lots of room so its not compressed (now I'm comparing vinyls to CDs here).

Depends on whos handling them. Sure dust and stuff will get on the records and cause the crackling sound, but I buy my records new, and the only time I hear the poping or crackling is before the music plays, and I keep my records in great condition, I usually wipe them off with record cleaning stuff after a few plays.

Actually if im understanding what I'm (pretty sure) thinking your saying this could go either way... if what you're talking about, its metal and stuff correct? you may know I'm all into electronic music. So this is just a matter of who listens to what in this case

This is (obviously) true. Whereas CDs have a laser reading it, vinyls have a sharp thin needle rubbing against it... which is why whenever I get new vinyls the first time I usually play them is to record them to my computer.

Now the thing like I said before about computer DJs... the software pretty much does it for you. sure you tell it when to go but the thing is its too easy (for me at least). I've done numerous parties with perfect beatmatching. Takes practice and a good ear. Am I degrading MP3/Ogg? reading back it may have looked like I did and obviously not, its got all the sound on memory somewhere (meaning hard drive/flash drive). I have all my music on iTunes and such... but I also have them all on CDs or vinyls (and if its available on CD, I buy it on CD/vinyl, if not (which is kinda occasional) then yes I'll buy it from iTunes or Beatport). I just like the feel of mixing music with CDs/vinyls. I like to be kept busy while mixing music (which is why when I start performing my own music I'll be making it on stage, meaning cuing the synths and drums and playing out some of the notes), but some computer DJs I see just mix the song... and stand there. Woo. But that stuff is obviously all opinion, not fact =) Woah sorry this should've been... well not discussed in this thread haha

True , and fair enough, I haven't really done any myself, so I guess I don't have that understanding of actually doing it and going from one to anther, although I think that perhaps when using prerecorded tracks there is less for someone to do anyway. Interesting point about the quality - it's the difference between sample rate and the accuracy of the reproduction though, an analogue signal is much more susceptible to noise, although it is a continuous sample. Two different ways of measuring quality. Either way, in the end, each to their own

Well, like HNM said, analog is on it's way out, like it or not. The liberal arts theatre at school (where I spend a lot of my time for EC credit, as a sound tech and lighting tech), it's about 75% digital. Everything after the microphones and mixer is over toslink or http streamed over cat5e.

The one time I did DJ (for a school dance) I used the software method. I know, I'm a noob. Anyways, all I had to do was plug in a big external disk with a lot of songs (they made me play Hip-Hop and R&B. yuck), check auto-match bpm, and move the crossfader back and forth all night pretending I was doing something really badass. Also, software scratching doesn't sound anything like the real thing.

True on scratching - that's a difference in style though as if someone tried that where I go, they would have to duck from a rain of bottles

Very nice!
Yours, or something you found?

I know a great shop that does case airbrushing, I might get it done when I build my next PC... Then I will have something REALLY worthy of photos, because as nice as my current rig is, it's a little plain.
