Nor do I. They are two very different things in my book. Unfortunatly I can't really think of a better way of articulating that. I agree entirely that you can kame somebody that you don't like. In fact, I think that there are more people that I generally dislike that I kame than people that I like.

Seeing, to me means being able to look at the person in front of you, and know of their intent, be it good or bad. It means being able to look deep into their soul and find their sorrow, or joy... and to help mend, or to celebrate with them.
Seeing means being able to look at the destruction that we as humans cause to each other, and know that only we as humans can turn that evil around and heal our trust. Seeing is knowing, and with knowing comes the willingness to act in a positive way. The Na'vi (albeit a bit wary of humans, and for good reason) initially trusted humans in the beginning and for the most part, most humans attempted to treat the Na'vi with dignity and respect. Then along comes RDA and those hacks under Quaritch. (Save Trudy -- She was a Peach).
Even with all that deception and trickery going on, Neytiri saw something good in Jake initially. Even though he was "ketuwan" (alien) and she knew that trusting him was tactically dangerous... she SAW him. She was able to see the good within him. (With a little help from the Sacred Tree).

I personally believe Seeing is to become harmonic with something and have a deep-rooted connection to it. I also believe that this does not have to be a person-to-person connection. You can indeed See a person, but I also think you can See other things such as the interconnectedness of the world around us. Even ethereal things such as the 'universe' (in an energy sense, not a 'stars and planets' sense) and even things like music can be Seen.

In short- I believe the definition of Seeing is a deep-seated spiritual resonance.

This thread might help.

I believe seeing is to truly understand something to the core, with nothing left out.

Seeing and not seeing, a complex subject that is for sure.

Not seeing is the 99+% of people out in the world. I find myself surrounded by people with limited vision. They see the reflected light, but they don't perceive. They don't appreciate what is in front of them.

In other ways what I call seeing is what others call thinking outside the box. Mot peoples perception is so limited by a constrained imagination. I have a deep connection with the world around me and even some of my close friends just don't get it. It's out there waiting for you. You just have to be open to it.

You sure?

Do you talk to them? Do you follow them to their homes? Do you read their thoughts?

Do you see them?

Believe me, 99% of people act differently when with friends, or in public. The only way someone could know for sure is if they genuinely asked.

They ignore everything around them. All they are interested in is their little isolated world.
Some people only think of them
Their deeds remind me what I never want to be
They have no reason to exist
All they do in life is count their money

THAT is not Seeing.

Well, look at it this way.

When I'm outside, I ignore most around me. I keep to myself. I still understand our world as much as you do.

Actions and Personality? Ok, tell me what they do, how they act.
I know people also act differently around friends or family. As I said, you can't know for sure unless you ask them.

For example: My friend Daniel nearly always talks about games, or Nintendo, or school work. Yet I asked him, and he's hoping someone gets off their ass and does something about the environment.
And of course they would seem to care about themselves! Life has always been a battle for survival, their existance requires them to!

Must I say more?

I think that there would be several different aspects of "Seeing". Clearly two people who were very close or in love would 'See' each other differently than other people. I think another aspect of this--and probably a far more common meaning among the Na'vi--is something like: "You have my full attention". "I am looking at you and I am listening to what you have to say." It would be a sign of respect rather than love or even friendship.

Well said... for me, Seeing and love were always two completely different things... it's even possible to See someone you really do not like, if you understand their feelings and motivation, if you consider them as a person.

My friend has a wonderful quote in her recent blog at Dr. Cara Barker: 5 Steps to Get Your Life Back on Track

Quote:
[...] Physician Frederick Franck puts it this way, pointing out that what's at stake in our blindness is bigger than lost socks:

"... Everything in our society seems to conspire against our inborn human gift of seeing. We have become addicted to merely looking at things and beings. The more we regress from seeing to looking at the world -- through the ever more perfected machinery ... the less we see. The less we see, the more numbed we become to the joy and the pain of being alive, and the further estranged we become from ourselves and all others ... If we could really see what day after day is shown on the six o'clock news, we would burst into tears. We would pray or kneel ... over that screen in an impotent gesture of exorcising such evil, such insanity. But there we sit, programmed as we are to look at, to stare passively at those burning tanks, those animals choking in oil spills. We perfunctorily shake our heads, take another sip of our drink and stare at the manic commercials until the thing switches back to smiling bigwigs reviewing honor guards, rows of corpses and beauty queens preening. No wonder that ... meaning is lost..."

Pretty current, don't you think? Franck wrote these words nearly 20 years ago. He began to stop looking and start seeing when he realized that he became a doctor to please his family, and this contamination was not fulfilling.[...]
