The quote was,
Depression isn't a sign of weakness, its a sign you have been strong for too long What do you guys think? I have to agree, I've pushed past so much stuff, acted like the stuff that sucked didn't matter, but now its all caught up on me. All the guilt from stuff I've done or thought about makes me feel sick... my actions make me feel like just another one of those people who don't See, I could go on... but I want to hear your opinions |

I dont know that I would say you have been strong for to long, it seems more to me like I have held back true emotions. I would consider being strong to work out of the depression and embrace your new found view on the world.
I would maybe alter it to, "Depression is not weakness, it is just proof that your soul is finally breaking free" or something to that degree.

Second guessing the past is terrible. It messes with your head and is unhealthy.
What has happened happened.

I think the quote is bull. At least, concerning prolonged depression (which is what I mean to refer to in the next two paragraphs).
I've seen people depressed for absolutely no reason at all. They take drugs to melt it away, and some commit suicide for no reason other than "they're depressed". When I look at that quote, I'm not thinking about people with PAD, I'm thinking about people with general depression, and some people have depression not because they've "been strong for too long"; they're depressed because they've always been miserable pity pot pessimists. I'm not against people with depression (except maybe those who have depression for no reason at all). But that quote, to me, is a gross generalization. I agree, there are many times where depression isn't a sign of weakness... but I'm guessing about less than 5% of the world's population with depression have it because they've been holding back their feelings. |

Right. Crying is a release of trauma. Depression is a prolonged avoidance of confronting a painful reality.

Interesting quote. Although, I thin it's only true in some cases.

Yeah not all depression is because of that, but some is
![]() It definitely takes a toll on you trying to be so strong and not letting anyone in. That's part of the reason I freaked out yesterday |

I can go with the crying version. The times in my life that I have been depressed this quote would not be true. In fact I have grown much stronger and resilient emotionally as the years have gone by. I'm like a rock now and not much gets me down for more than a little while.

Quote:
So depression definitely is not a asign of weakness. A lot of depression actually comes from beeing "too strong" in a certain sense. That sense is, that if a stressful situation or environment is around the mind can react in different ways. One of them is to try to "be strong" in the sense of pushing through it while shutting off not only fear but all emotions altogether. This is especially happening if the situation is one that goes into the emotionally stressful. "Beeing strong" is in this culture often equal to not showing emotions (and eventually not feeling emotions). And as long term depression (not PAD) is very much defined by that state of emotional numbness it is reasonable to see the cause of it in trying to be strong against some negative influence by using depression/emotional numbness as a shield. Why so many people are depressed seemingly without any direct cause? Often there is a cause, just it is not noticed or has been pushed aside. And then there is a general increase in depression in industrialized countries, which may relate to this: Untitled Document Crying on the other hand is actually a sign of getting better in that it is an emotion showing up. If something really horrible is happening, tears will not flow, only once one can deal with that properly and emotionally they will come. When I first saw Avatar, I was on and off antidepressants and pretty much was in that state (as these stupid buggers didnt help at all). Seeing the home tree fall and the tree of voiced bulldozed pretty much shocked me but I did not cry - I was beyond that for a moment. But then in both scenes the characters of the movie went from their own state of shock and disbelief into a state of crying and that carried me with them, so I did, too. And this actually helped me to get out of the depressive state quite a bit. It was a "significant emotional event", and such a SEE can have this effect. I had some events like that before, either bringing me out of depression or into other states of mind, so these things can be quite powerful.

It's really true... I've spent the last >19 years having to protect myself, never able to get really close. That's all changed in the last year (well, 9 months)... I've given you all so much of my true feelings and my self, I've stopped taking everything on myself...
