k - since Friday, had a tightness in my chest, that mostly I thought was just allergies to Seasonal Fall (and friends smoking), and feeling a bit run down over the weekend. But today broke out into a fever at work, and yeah Mika is sick and I mean sick with a chest infection.

So thought I would introduce an old fashioned Folklore remedy for loosening a tight chest, whether its Bronchitis, Pneumonia, or Pleurisy.

Its called a Mustard Plast, and its fairly easy to make

Mix 4 Tablespoons Dry Mustard Powder equally with 4 Tablespoons Flour with boiling water to make a wet but thick paste. Wrap it up in a brown paper bag (cut open and unfolded) and then a towel.

Alternate putting on your chest for 10 mins and then back 10 mins. Reheat in the microwave or oven as needed - and can keep in a bag in the fridge for a couple of days, reheating as needed (0ccasionaly may need to sprinkle some water on outside of Mustard Pack to moisten!

So alongside with ones usual remedies, this works effectively to loosen up all the infection and phlem in the chest!

Additional Native Healing Traditions, encourage one to wrap up in lots of warm blankets and literally 'sweat' the fever out! This usually can help one break their 'fever' quicker and rid the body of toxins!

Figured on Pandora the Na'vi Healing Arts would include such traditional teachings that I'd pass it on!

Now Mika is going to bed and hopefully will be feeling better soon!

Interesting. I don't see how that works, but as they say, "The proof is in the pudding."

Actually, "sweating" a fever out works by helping your body increase its temperature, sterilizing your body. Less to do with "toxins" more to do with killing bacteria.

But yeah, "Down home" stuff is really all we have to fight those nasty little viral infections. Colds suck.

Good for you. If you get the opportunity to try a poultice (not that I would want you to be in that situation), let me know if that works.

My wife swears by the same principle; on the few occasions that she's had the 'flu, she would retire to bed and the cats would instinctively pile on her, raising her temperature to such a point that it broke her fever.

My mum always uses natural remedies. As she says, they "get rid of the source, unlike modern medicines that only remove the symptoms."

I'll take her word for it. She's had high blood pressure for ages, and it's finally going now.

Its amazing just how effective Natural Remedies can be, I'm definitely feeling better today!

Word to the wise though .. when doing the Mustard Plast .. definitely don't leave on longer than 10 minutes, and though you want it hot, be careful! Or you end up with red blotches from the heat (ie: burning)!

This. The higher temperature is less optimal for most bacteria and some toxins (although it doesn't remove them from the body any faster), and also increases activity of T-cells.

I have to say... if you think it works, it likely will. There is a basis for some plant-based medicines, but some things actually just cause the person to create their own cure by thinking they can
