WHAT... THE... ****!
How dare they treat these creatures in such a disrespectful way, anybody with a heart can see how cruel this is! If a human was treated like this, somebody would do something but because crabs are 'less important', nobody cares, just ... URGH!! I don't know who the hell thought of this but I hope they suffer a similar demise to these poor crabs. Last edited by Marvellous Chester; 10-29-2010 at 01:17 PM. |

I KNEW there was more to this. Chilled down, they're probably not even conscious till they get pulled out of the package. And again, its Asia. They have their own set of social norms and culture. It's not our place to force them to adopt our own.

Be better if it cooked it on the spot.

It seems they're supposed to be eaten raw and alive.

Just because they're unconcious, doesn't make it right.

The idea is that they are bought alive, brought home, and cooked immediately. If any of you are familiar with how crabs are prepared, they ARE cooked alive, not killed first. If its already dead, then its spoiled.
For those of you saying they should be in an aquarium, they are only kept in aquariums for long term storage. Its not uncommon to just put a bunch of em in a bucket and let em sit there in a store. The only other alternative is to prepackage them using processed methods which isn't exactly always appealing. Is a vending machine really that different than having them sit in a dry bucket all day? If anything I'd say the vending machine is more "humane" for the crustaceans. Nothing surprising here. Used to have fresh crab cooked a lot at home. Its food. If the intent wasn't to eat them, yeah something would be wrong. Last edited by Banefull; 10-30-2010 at 01:15 AM. |

Hmm...
There's just something about it being a vending machine though... Just seems pretty callous to me.

Through time I'd just seen a few pics around the internet of kittens in bottles and thought, "Wha-?" I didn't even know they were called "bonsai kittens" 'till today.

Super fresh!
My mum's gotten live mudcrab before, but she leaves it in the freezer until it 'rests' from the cold. It's the least cruel way to do it.

Are you saying that makes it okay to disrespect them, simply because we are superior?
You did watch Avatar, didn't you? I go crabbing every few summers in Washington, and when I pull up my catch and decide which ones I can/will eat, I put them in a big tub of fresh seawater until I'm ready to kill them. Then, I quickly cut them in half with a very large, sharp knife, from the underside, so that it happens quickly and they feel little pain. If they exist, they deserve to be honored for that. And no, I'm not just saying this "cuz I saw Avatar". I've been this way all my life. If you don't respect the other living things you share your world with, you don't deserve to live there.
