Default Underwater nuclear test WIGWAM

I've got a video here that took me by surprise. It covers the deep underwater WIGWAM nuclear bomb test. 30kt explosive force. The test was to record the effects nuclear depth charges had on submarines.

After detonation the camera will switch to a view inside the submarine, it simply disintergrates before losing signal.

Indeed gentlemen.

Apparently it took .02 seconds for the submarine to vapourize.

Imagine if you were the sonar operator on a sub and you detected one of these closing in on you, next thing you know you've been disintergrated into nothingness.

Not exactly but the sodium in it turns into an extremely radioactive sodium-24 with a half-life of 15 hours. So you don't want to go anywhere near the blast zone for at least a day to be safe.

The idea of testing such a weapon comes from the mentality, "Just in case we need to blow up a couple hundred thousand people, in a moments notice, we know we can do it."

Not really, the point is to discourage anyone from attacking. If such a weapon ever has to be launched, it has failed in its purpose. That's the reason most countries apart from the US don't even maintain any aircraft-based ones any more, only sub and silo based.

OMG for Overkill. I wonder how bad that was for the environment, you can tell from the steam plume that something interesting was happening down there. Also probably stunned all the fish in a 100 mile radius.

Love the old tech in this video. Dekatrons, nixie tubes... do want.

Easily.

You think that one was bad, it was only a 30kt blast yield. Check out this one from Operation: Hardtack 1958
