I noticed that not everyone in the street scenes and at the bar was wearing or even carrying a filter mask, Jake included.

Perhaps some people either have tougher lungs than others or can't afford the masks?

Could be...

The air got so polluted in the way we couldn't be able to breathe it. Even the air on Earth got hostile but because it's "our fault".

The air is breathable just not healthy for you. Think about how some people continually do not wear sunscreen out on the beach and they get skin cancer or melanoma some twenty years later. Same with this (but more extreme). I would imagine that some people just neglect to wear masks anyways and end up with asthma or lung cancer a few years later.

It explains why we live so short... Artificial life. This won't change until "some" will notice that we don't need to depend on "artificial" anymore. When will that happen ?
