Meh, the visuals and 3d will only take you so far. Nothing can compare to the story and universe that Avatar has. But with that said, I really want to see this...seems that most people love it, or at least like it.

I won't say anything until watching Tron too, guess I'll go this week at the IMAX in the city, many people say it's interesting. I know something about this Tron, is inspired from the oldie console game and that the OST is made by Daft Punk (a great thing !).

When a forum is based solely on trying to prove the film it's for is better than another, it's doomed to fail quickly.

As for the Avatar/Tron comparison, I can't really comment having not seen it... But i'm sure few people will walk away from Tron, wishing they were still in that world, or with the people they watched.

I went and saw Tron on Friday. It did have awesome effects, yes, but no real emotion.

I will buy the soundtrack, but not the movie.

Pirates of the Caribbean is made by Disney too, and its soundtrack is amazing...

Why are they doing this?

Yes, Avatar was a better film to me, as amazing as Tron was... I'll do a Pros/Cons list for Tron as compared to Avatar (which shouldn't be done anyway, but I might as well).

Pro: Tron had more of an intelligent storyline and dialogue than Avatar (no wonder; the writers of Tron wrote over 20 episodes of "Lost" together).

Con: As strong as the emotional bond between the father and son was in Tron, Avatar gave a deeper connection to the audience with Jake and Neytiri's love story.

Pro: Tron paid more attention to audience intuition when it came to certain scenes regarding the message, whereas Avatar's message was sort of in your face.

Con: Avatar felt like a more free environment to gaze at, considering how the setting took place on an entire moon. Most of Tron's environment was limited to the grid area, and Flynn's "off-grid" home.

Pro: While Avatar gave this strong spiritual vibe to the whole movie with all the trees, tsaheylu, eywa, and other instances, Tron was surprisingly more geared toward a subtle, yet obvious religious undertone with the concept of creation, god, man, disobedience, redemption, meditation, and all sorts of spiritual concepts that we can understand on a deeper level since they can be achieved on earth. The spirituality in Avatar is unattainable, while in Tron it's more realistic.

Con: Avatar's overall special effects are better, concerning facial mo-capping and other biological entities.

Pro: Tron's overall special effects are better than Avatar concerning non-biological movement of machines, and anything that doesn't move like a human or animal.

Con: Avatar possesses a fuller story than Tron (even when you include the first movie with Legacy), and leaves you more satisfied in the end.

Pro: Tron deals with life situations that more of us could relate to in real life (not including plot elements that could obviously never happen), while most of the life situations for Jake in Avatar will never be experienced by any one of us. Of course, the situations in Avatar are also fictitious, but considering the simplicity of everything, replace Neytiri with an indian, replace survival on Pandora with survival in a jungle, replace fighting in an aerial ikran battle with fighting in an aerial battle in real combat terms, like helicopters, fighter jets, etc.

Con: Avatar gets you more involved with the characters, and makes you care more about them.

That's all I can really think up at the moment. Avatar wins in my mind, but I can't say that Tron is absolutely inferior to Avatar in every way, because it isn't.

It looks like an OK enough movie, but you can just tell it will use 3D as a gimmick, and I really don't like style anywhere NEAR as much. 99.9% of people will see it once and forget it. Myself, I'm not even going to waste the time and money on it at the cinema, I'm short on both at the moment.

Also, Woodsprite, how exactly are the machines in Avatar unrealistic? They are far more realistic than anything in Tron...

The machines in Avatar (to me) were very fluid and not as convincingly mechanical as the machines in Tron.

Saw Tron and it was okay. Better than I expected, really. But still not within light years of Avatar. Tron's visuals were cool, but not once will you ever stop and say: "Wow, that looks real!" Because Tron is taking place inside a computer where nothing is real anyway. Avatar is on a distant planet with its own ecosystem and a frame of reference we can relate to. Plus, Avatar has way better characters and story There's really no comparison. Still, that's no reason not to go see Tron. It's fun in it's own right.

Everyone has said more or less what I had in mind.... So I'll just say this:

Avatar is better, end of.

I wouldn't believe any hype for that matter, as I usually end up liking the movie/game/whatever less when my expectations are high. That's probably part of the reason why Avatar blew me away in cinema, as I was expecting "another movie about people shooting aliens and vice versa, made in usa" lol
