What did you think of "Inception"

Inception was recently released on dvd so I went to see all the fuss.

Wow, impressive. Very high concept well done.

BUT, the final scene has me a tad torn. When the screen goes blank, I literally YELLED at it. Both because of what happens (no spoiler), but because I WOULD AND HAVE DONE THE SAME THING! (see my original fic). Nolan is a genius and a COPYCAT!!

The movie itself could have been done way better in my opinion - but the ending was completely ingenious.

It really reflects back on the entire movie and portraits a strong message. I won't go in further on that though - both to keep spoilers out, and because nobody sees the exact same message in a movie.

The movie is an intellectual drama with good names attached onto concepts, such as the 'kick' or the 'architect', that we all recognize (in definition). The movie pulled it off brilliantly, with making 1 of the 3 conflicts an instance of plausibly forgiveness which risked everyone's life not just Cobbs. I saw the movie 4 times (by accident) and I completely got what the movie was about to the fine detail, and it gave me manly tears. It was beautiful and very satisfying.

• The plot: Idea implantation

Inception was the concept of diving deep enough to plant an idea, instead of stealing it. Inception is diving deep enough into the target's mind to motivate and create an idea, and the contagiousness of the idea will manifest the upper levels of the target's mind, creating the fabricated idea on it's own. When they go into the CEO's mind, their in his subconscious, and the dreamer is the architect that hosts all of the memories, projections, layout of the landscape that the target's mind populates. Cobb found himself planting an idea in Moa's head that their is no real reality and that you would have to die to go up to the next level. Cobb did this when he experimented with pushing the boundaries of his unconscious mind before he took the job from the Asian CEO, until he pushed so far into subconscious that he entered the state of Limbo, infinite-unlimited dream space. Inception was Cobb's downfall and why he remains in his state of Limbo. He forgave himself for her death and claimed that they already have lived a life together, it was time for him to let go. The Asian CEO remained limbo as well, in his own version, "Waiting for the man, In a half-remembered dream, Becoming an old man, Filled with regret". Cobb's biggest worry was his children, and that it what Cobb received after Moa's forgiveness. He lives his life in a half-remembered dream, filled with happiness. The status of the team is alive, we know their alive and that the inception had worked.

To really wrap my head around the all the movie, and to completely "get it," I'll admit I had to see it a couple of times. The ending was spectacular; I needn't go further.

Ive heard nothing but good things about it and actually picked it up tonight at Target on Blue-Ray so looking forward to a real big treat

It was awesome. Although, I had a hard time connecting with a particular character, which is the most important part for me.

One thing that confused/s me was "the kick", where when your body falls it wakes you up from the dream the mind of that body is in* but when they used it they were falling in the dream they were in to wake themselves up a level.

*eg. Your real body is at dream level 0, you have a body in dream level 1 as well as dream level 2. They way they explained it (unless I misinterpreted) was that your dream level 1 body falling should yank you back from dream level 2 but when they did it to get back to reality they were falling in the dream they were in to get to the one above it.

I thought it was great, the story and acting was very well done IMO. It is one of those movies that you need to watch more then once to fully get everything. Hans Zimmer did a fantastic job on the score, wouldn't be surprised if he takes an Oscar home for it

Dream phase 3, they died from c4. Dream phase 2 The elevator to created a kick for those who were not in the explosion. Dream phase 1, the kick was when the van hit the water.

Maybe it was just me, but I found it to be pretty pretentious and trying to be overly complex, often just for the sake of it.

Like it was a blockbuster desparately trying to be an edgy, art-house film.

That is to say, I didn't really enjoy it, or 'get' the appeal of the film. It just seemed to be more style over substance than anything, in my book. Maybe a proper sit down and watch session with it would resolve that feeling, but I really have no desire to invest any more time in it...

I don't think it was trying to be. Nolan is quite introverted when it comes to filmmaking, especially when he collaborates with his brother. He's only made 7 films, and 6 of them are either famous blockbusters, or cult classics. The style of writing and complexity is just typical Nolan; why he's my favorite director. Not only because of that, but because he writes his own films along with directing. I respect him more than other mainstream Hollywood directors like Spielberg, Scorsese, or Tarantino. Whenever my mother watches a film of his, she always asks at the end about "who wrote the book", and tell her, "No mom, Nolan wrote it. It's original." 'Insomnia' is the only film that the Nolan brothers did not originally write themselves.

It was an entertaining, intelligent thriller. My #2 after Avatar.
