Oh good God no... Just, no. Ugh. LotR is superior to every film, imo, both in acting and heart. I don't think it'll ever be topped. Avatar may have better effects, and Star Trek (whatever version) may have a spanned scale, but LotR is forever. It's a classic that'll never get old, and never lose any audience. Plus, the fact that more people find it appealing all over the world... it garners a mutual respect. I've never met a person, both on the internet and irl, that has disliked LotR.

What would you say if it hasn't been a book series first?
Face it, you'd have criticised it as cliched, overly long and complicated, and derivative (yes, I KNOW that it invented many of the common elements, or at least was the first story with them to achieve widespread success that is still remembered). It's an excellent film, and well-made, but still owes a LOT of its popularity to an existing fanbase. After all, you're on an Avatar forum, not a LOTR one (although admittedly, you could just as easily be on either, with your preferred topics of discussion being primarily off topic).

I just think LotR is an overall better film series because it's more in-depth, and more intelligent than Avatar, in addition to having pretty good effects, action, adventure, and amazing scenery... and the characters are better expounded upon as well, imo.

You can't compare LOTR to avatar because avatar is just getting started. When it has three or more films out, then you can compare the two.

Tron has nothing on Avatar. Period.

Exactly! Wait a couple of years and we'll see how the Avatar trilogy plays out.

And I haven't yet seen Tron so... *stays quiet*

I'm wondering that myself. Avatar, as a trilogy, could come close to (if not surpassing) LotR. If Cameron brushes up on a more sophisticated script, and develops the characters a WHOLE lot more than he did in the first film, we'll be looking at a winner. Not just in my own opinion... but possibly the opinions of the Academy Awards. I'm being completely serious, as much as I dislike what the Oscars have become.

If they ignore it again they will lose what little credibility they have left. The same thing happened with Titanic, after The Abyss wasn't given the awards it completely deserved.

To be honest, I hated the way LoTR ended.

I demand happy endings. Not. Endings, that just... end. Terribly.

While I like LOTR, I have to say that star trek tops it by a little. Mostly first contact/generations/the new one. Also Avatar tops star trek. However this probably due to my love of sci-fi.

I agree on LOTR and First Contact. Generations was just bad though, and that abrams thing is the only film (other than Twilight ) that I would erase from existence if I could.

Yeah twilight needs to be erased for sure! About star trek, first contact will always be my favorite. However I think generations was unique in that it brought the two casts together and brought in the next gen to the movie stage. And while the Abrams movie wasn't perfect, it did revive the franchise.
Also not mentioned is The Wrath Of Khan, also pretty good for its time.

And back to Avatar and Tron, here is where I would rank all the movies...
1. Avatar
2. First Contact
3. Generations
4. Wrath of Khan
5. LOTR trilogy
6. Star Trek (New)
7. Matrix
8. Inception
9. Ink
Somewhere around 20. Tron

Never seen Tron, but I'm almost certain I wouldn't watch it more than 30 times like I have with Avatar. Still, I'll definitely be checking it out once it's released on Blu-ray.

On topic:

As mentioned earlier Avatar is an epic experience. Tron:Legacy was an epic movie. I did get some feelings from Tron, wanting to be on the grid, explore the place, the people but it was just for a few weeks, the wonder and dream of Pandora and the Na'vi has stayed with me for almost a year.

As for the music. I loved it, I had never heard any music like it before in my life, and as soon as it kicked in at the title screen I got goosebumps. Still do to whenever I listen to it. I like how it is a different approach to a movie score and it fits the movie great.

Off topic:

Comparing Avatar to LoTR and First Contact, and a few other films.

Avatar to LoTR. I really do love LoTR, I thoroughly adore all three films, I haven't the read books yet but have them and they are on the list for when I finish the book I'm on. I am really looking forward to it. LoTR has very well thought out story line, lots of subplots, sub-conflicts, and paths that flow into and out of each other making for a wonderful experience and story. The characters are also very well played and thought out. Avatar, so far, has a linear story line with a few subconflicts(ie: Jake vs Quaritch, Jake vs disability) But other than that it's a love story with good vs bad. As said a million times over we have seen this before but it's a great story worth showing over and over again. As long as it's in a different from. And Avatar took that new form to a whole new level.

Avatar and First Contact. I always try to watch First Contact atleast a few times a year. To me the best part is after the Vulcans arrive and it's panning out of the forest to the sky. Because my mind floods with all the steps and adventures that will come of the meeting of the two civilizations. The bonds that will be made, the paths that will be made, and steps taken. It's a whole world of imagination that comes to me after that part. That is the most profound thing about First Contact that I get. Of course it's a great film, great music and a great way-IMO to end TNG line. Nemisis just sucked. Avatar gave the feeling throughout the entire film, the awe, the capture was just there from start to finish.

Avatar vs Atlantis

I feel that Atlantis never got the credit it deserved. You look at it and it is very very similar to Avatar. A man with his human companions goes on an expedition and finds a native culture and joins them to fight off his human companions who turn against him. It captivated me in my youth for awhile, but I never knew of fan forums or internet for that matter and was never able to indulge into it much. It's a wonderful movie with a wonderful people. But I could talk all I want about it but it seems like Avatar but dime-sized to me. If you get my analogy.
