yeah me too....a reason I like "hammocking it". I dunno, we have plenty of time to figure out hike/camp/backpack...I'm sure that we will do one of them though. It depends on what people want to do.

Right now I'm thinking about having:

1. a one night backpacking trip either before the meetup of after.
- not too difficult...More of a fun trip and a chance to take the bow out for a spin and sleep under the stars and have a fire.
YOU WILL NEED:
- at least a little experience outdoors.
- in shape and have enough stamina.
- the gear (ie..tent/backpacking pack/sleeping bag/hiking boots/pad....ect)
(I can supply some of the stuff for the group like stoves(2)with isobutane/grate/extra tents(3)/extra pack(1)...ect)

2. And a day hike during the meetup.
-a simple short hike in the olympic peninsula *rainforest*. See some wildlife and have a fun time. Maybe pick up sandwiches somewhere and eat lunch on the trail.
YOU WILL NEED:
- at least a little in-shape
- water bottle/snacks/jacket

There will be an alternate plan for the day for those who don't want to go on the hike.

ANYONE IS WELCOME TO JOIN EITHER ONE.

*Just some thoughts...* Nothing is decided yet.

I'd be up for the first, but bringing everything might be a bit of a problem for me. I might do the second as well, will have to see.

I never get to see the stars!
Just one more reason this is a great idea! I'm in cities so often, I almost never think about actually going outside and seeing them for myself. In southeast Louisiana, it's hard to see them even if you're not exactly in a city because of all the refinery fires and stuff.

Yeah, I think I do too.

And I'd be able to do your 2nd one, Aketuan -- the day hike (since I don't think I have enough outdoors experience to do the overnight camping one).

Eeee, we're gettting all excited already and we still have a year to go! The suspense is killing me!

Like HNM, bringing all that stuff for us from the UK might be a bit on the excess baggage side of things, especially as I will probably be dropping off to see my Avatar mates on the east coast again...unless I can get them to come. Hehehe.

I say, Aketuan, would you be allow to bring the isobutane-thingy-gizmo on the plane? Pressurised container and all that?

There might be a cunning plan though and that is...in Seattle, not too far from where we stayed, there is an outdoor pursuits shop called REI (REI Summer Sale thru July 4: Save Up to 30% on Outdoor Clothing, Gear and Equipment for Camping, Hiking, Cycling, Fitness & More for the Family) and it looks like they hire stuff out (REI: Store Rental Equipment). So for those of us travelling a long way or not wanting to spend a load of money kitting up, it might be an ideal solution.

We will also need to sort out somewhere that we can store our stuff that we don't want to take as well.

I think the thing I will really be looking forward to is seeing the stars. We never get to see them properly in the UK as we are so densely populated there is always too much light polution to see anything. Time for some very long exposure photos, hey Mikko? You what, though, it'll probably be bucketing it down! Can we pre-order some clear skies please?

Alan

Lol. Yeah I would have to buy some isobutane in WA.

REI is a great place. There is one 10 minutes from my house and I get most of my gear there. They do have a great rental program.

As for where to leave our stuff.,.we'd have to work that out.

From what I can tell, the consensus is to have the backpacking after the meetup. And seeing the stars is a big deal for a lot of people.

Once things get worked out and some time has passed I'll get some sort of sign up going for the backpacking. The hike being part of the meetup wouldn't require anything special.

I'm so looking forward to next year!

(I might be backpacking this weekend ( oddly enough) so I'll be offline mostly. (unless I get Internet out there. ))

We have enough experienced campers in the group that I'd say that you need zero experience to join us. Just a strong heart, no fear...

As Aketuan said; just a little stamina to walk a couple of miles; and generally carrying your own gear in a pack is considered polite; though there's normally some dumb grunt in the group who figures it's just another hell yeah and doesn't mind carrying extra communal gear.

... assuming it's nothing unreasonable:

And there's no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate equipment.
But lets not pray for any tompa!

- Mikko ... is a dumb grunt, who should be kept away from the temptation of REI so as not to ware out his membership card.

Talking of uploading...thanks James... I've now been able to add a bit of commentry to the beginning of the Seattle video. I've uploaded like 2 minutes...or something, on to You Tube. The end is a bit manky, but you'll get the idea. Hope you like the commentry style! Here it is:

ma tsmukan Alan .... this is AMAZING, FABULOUS, AWESOME! It is evident that you have spent a WHOLE lot of time putting this together. I love your narrative. Thank you, thank you, thank you .... what a perfect memento this will be of our family gathering.
