I don't really think the Egyptian government knows how deep this goes, or the entire Arab world for that matter. This has been a powderkeg of anger that has been growing for decades, if not longer, and every year, the right-wing religious, economic, and social repression that grips that society causes that powderkeg to fill a little more. It was inevitable that eventually something would set it off (quite ironically the self-immolation of Mohammed Bouazizi).

If the Egyptian (and soon Yemenese) government wants this to involve as little bloodshed as possible, they should just step aside, but unfortunately it doesn't look like it will go down like that.

Right wing elements are the ones revolting. Just so you know.

Actually, it's just about every single opposition group - the single largest happens to be right wing but they aren't all.

My point was, the right isn't always responsible for oppressive governments.

In that case, then for once, I completely agree.

Democracy and secularism.

Doesn't sound very right-wing to me.

Democracy is not a concept reserved for the left...

And what makes you think they're secular?

The Daily Star - Opinion Articles - Tunisia's revolution was led by the secular middle class

I'm guessing it's similar forces at work in Egypt. Kinda hard to confirm it since the entire country's in lockdown right now. We'll see when the dust settles.

Egypt's riots were not intentional. It wasn't a revolution, just a protest. A protest that got stomped on. There is no connection between the two groups.

It is becoming one, though. There was enough tension already built up, and the government putting the boots down pushed them over the edge. You push a people too far, they'll push back.

It will be interesting to see how far this thing spreads geographically. Maybe it won't be limited to the Arab countries. The Great-PIIGS countries of Europe, perhaps?

The only relation is the violence.

I don't know, I still think it's something bigger. What other than inherent societal problems in the Arab world could cause the entire area to erupt as it is currently? Like I said before, decades of repression have created a powderkeg, Tunisia set it off, and now it's completely burning - in Tunisia, in Egypt, in Yemen, and in Jordan. Sure, Yemen and Jordan might simply be protests now, but if the revolution in Egypt is successful, the revolutionary mindset could domino into them, as well.

@video - Wow. I'm speechless...wow... I think I may have shed a tear.

Afaik, Yemen's protests are still violence free.

Kinda surprising considering their country is usually pretty violent.
