I won't comment on The Hurt Locker, since I haven't seen that film. However, I agree with icu.

If it didn't beat Avatar I'm sure more people on here would like it.
But the Oscars certainly lack any sense of courtesy.

AC130 -- I couldn't have said it better.

I'm boycotting the Oscars.... The only reason I watched last year... well, you pretty much know the answer to that.

Hurt Locker had excellent acting, incredible emotion, and fantastic cinematography.

But it had the feel of a dragging documentary with no plot. It was terribly uninteresting, and I was determined to give it a fair chance while watching. I'm sorry, I'm a regular watcher of the Military Channel and History Channel, and watching "The Hurt Locker" was like watching a slightly more intense version of "Marine Corps Survival School" (love that show).

And this is all on top of the fact that it wasn't nearly close to what the bomb defusers actually do (according to real marines), and nowhere near as dangerous. So there's your realism out the door.

I just didn't like it at all. I saw the whole thing through, tried to get interested, and failed. Trust me, I've done this with other films too, and it's worked before. For example, when I was getting all pissed off back in '08 about "Slumdog Millionaire" getting so much more attention than "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" (which I loved so much and very much wanted to win Best Picture), I finally went to see what all the fuss was about in theaters, and I walked in with an open mind. Would I like "Slumdog"? I DID. I loved it. And my opinion changed, thinking that I wouldn't mind too much if Slumdog won over Benjamin Button. The same thing, in fact, is happening this year with me. I really, really want "Inception" to win Best Picture... but after seeing "The King's Speech", I've gotta say that I wouldn't mind so much if it won over "Inception". It was that good, I thought.

But "The Hurt Locker"... no. Never did anything for me, never did anything to gain fame, never did anything to stand out (just another war movie), and never did anything for the majority of the audience (considering how it's the lowest-grossing film to have ever won Best Picture). It's just... in my humble opinion, it's just a "whatever" movie, in that I thought, "Whatever" after watching (along with a pinch of "What the hell? This deserved Best Picture?"). Even my mother, who hates Avatar, has agreed that Avatar deserved to win over "The Hurt Locker". We're talking about a woman who HATES AVATAR, saying it deserved to win over "The Hurt Locker". Think about that.

Feh, I don't really care. THL bored me throughout. Lack of realism killed it, plus as everyone has said, it was just used to kick Avatar off the front running. Not watching the Oscars, until Avatar 2 comes out. :3

I hardly ever listen to a movie critic, although I sometimes read the film reviews in the local newspaper. If the teasers look interesting enough to me, I'll pay my money and take my chances. Another way to get a good inside look at an upcomming film is when I go to the theater... and see the "Previews".

Oh, I like war movies. Saving Private Ryan. We Were Soldiers. Band of Brothers miniseries. Patton. Pork Chop Hill.

THL just wasn't engaging to me.
