Oh ****.
It seems all that steam built up and caused the building to explode. So much for scaremongering or slow leakage. Sh*t just got real... Bad. That explosion most likely hurled bits of radioactive reactor parts and fuel rods all over. Ironically, they say coolant-pool reactors don't explode. Why the fck didn't they think of steam buildup? EDIT: Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia 2011 Sendai earthquake and tsunami - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia This is very, very bad. Also, no Japanese news stations have broadcast this footage, not a good sign. Last night I was in bed and just before I was going to turn off the TV the video of the exploding building came on. So much for quickly falling asleep. That was a very powerful explosion. I thought the worst. Now it appears that it's not nearly as bad. We are getting near that 48 time frame where the heat generation decreases. I do hope that in a year or so we get a detailed publicly available detailed report on these incidents.
While this nuclear plant thing is an acute ongoing issue, the rest of the disaster dwarfs it. It's going to be several more days before the extent of the human disaster can be counted. I've just seen some of the reports from the hardest hit areas and the extent of the damage is dumbfounding. |

Definitely - too many people have no sense of proportion. Four people were injured and a few thousand evacuated as a precaution, compared to what news sites are now saying is over 1000 people killed from the earthquake and tsunami itself...

You're right there's no biological need for energy, but the need has been created and won't go away, and if production collapses on a global scale, it will result in world war 3 as surely as if oil production collapsed tomorrow.

Can we try to avoid a general debate on nuclear energy in the Japanese Tsunami thread? Yes, Fukushima is bad, but the earthquake/tsunami is by far the main disaster (Fukushima <<<< Chernobyl). And I fear that we may get sidetracked into an energy debate, when this really isn't the place for it.
Anyway, this is very sad. One of my friends is a Japanese language major and has a lot of friends over there. Thankfully, all of them seem to be fine, but she was pretty scared for them.

It's really sad that my country is unable to provide more help to Japan, after all, Japan is our most important cooperant for development. We have a Japanese Colony named Okinawa in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, which started as a cooperation society created by the Japanese immigrants to help the devastated city of Okinawa after WWII.
Really a shame to be unable to help more...

Update:
Current death toll is over 900 and thousands are missing in north japan. There are a few towns that rescue worker have yet to even get to because all modes of transportation are blocked. The Japanese government has begun handing out potassium iodide tablets in villages near the Fukushima evac zone. Workers are pumping seawater into reactor 1 in a desperate effort to keep the steel containment vessel of the reactor from melting, which according to CNN hasn't been effective. Radiation levels are over 1000uSv/hr in the control room.

As of late, it seems that there have been an unusually large amount of disasters both natural and man-made worldwide.

Goodness. Earthquake, tsunami, and now a nuclear powerplant explosion? I hope for the best for the Japanese people and that everything will be settled out.

Very sad what's going on there and one good fact is that people aren't and weren't in panic all the way. They are very skilled in precautions taken in front of natural disasters especially strong earthquakes. All nations should follow their example...
Friday at 9AM when I first saw on TV the "news", I was very frightened. Those massive tidal waves striking the land and destroying houses, cars, warehouses and also "transporting" them like toys was a very-very scary experience. It was scarier than the 2004 event in Sumatera, Phillipine Islands. The entire weekend was about the Japan's drama, earthquake, tsunami and then the nuclear power plant explosion of the first reactor. Conspiracies also say that HAARP was behind the whole thing, but no one makes it public, because it would scare the s**t out of the people across the Globe... Anyway, all the best thoughts to the Japanese. I also have a friend in college who is Japanese, I hope his family is okay...

For the scaremongers: It's nothing I haven't said before, but this goes into a little more detail:
Why I am not worried about Japan’s nuclear reactors. As for the conspiracy 'theories' - really... just. no.
