Have you seen any films that show a world that is the total opposite to Pandora, some really depressing dystopy where the Earth or some other world is destroyed by toxic waste, nuclear war or other destructive forces?
Which of these films did you find most depressing? |

The Book of Eli was really good at depicting a destroyed earth. Although, I didn't find it depressing.

I don't know about films but authors SURE do love writing about a future world where everything is bleak and horrible.
They've been wrong every time though, so far. The Earth in Blade Runner, though, wasn't so great. There was even advertising for people to leave the planet and "start a new life." In fact it looks similar in many ways to Earth as shown in Avatar CE.

I'd say Mordor, from LOTR, though it is just a part of Middle Earth but it's a horrendous place to be. Also, the post apocalyptic Earth of the Terminator series fits in your description.

Bladerunner and Children of Men are both movies that depict a decay in society and environment in the future.

One very un-Pandoran place is the world and society of THX 1138. Not only is it heavily regimented and unnatural, it is almost devoid of color. I can't think of another movie that's used white in greater amounts.

A documentary on Earth?
![]() Honestly, there are far too many fictional representations to choose from.

Hehe actually Avatar has both. Pandora and Earth - a living and a dying world.
Regarding movies, there are really a LOT. Matrix for example - utterly destroyed Earth. In terms of books I have one - "Trentor" from Asimovs "Foundation"-Series. It is a planet with one city - the city encompasses all of the planet. It takes thousands of spaceships each day to keep the city running and fed and supplied with resources. There is not just no green there but not even open water. Ok, presumably the upper class has some parks and artificial ponds and pools, but the natural landscape is completely built over. i think these two are the worst I can think of (except those with nuclear wars and such). A fun one is the Doctor Who Episode of "New New New York" with the eternal traffic jam - hilarious.

I was going to say "The news each night"; but HNM kinda got there with "documentary about Earth".
But of course; this has to be the win: Quote:
- Mikko ... regularly replaces "Walmart", etc.. with "B&L" when talking about them.
