Planet? Hmmm...Korhal, from Starcraft, after it was nuked by the confederacy.

Paralell universe? Terminator, definitely.

I wouldn't consider "our" Earth in Avatar to be an opposite, just a paralell to Pandora. Similar in many ways, but not in great shape due to misuse.

In 12 Monkeys in present day Earth: 2035 there are only a few people surviving underground with some scientists in tow due to a virus released in 1996 killing 5 billion people. The earth above is pretty much uninhabited and dirty relics litter the landscape.

In Twelve Monkeys though, I do believe the environment was more or less alive.

Yeah - I would not see a world without human inhabitants on the surface as opposite of Pandora. Actually for nonhumans it would probably be a relief - But of course it would be sad to not have human people there experiencing that. Still, I'd see the Earth in 'Avatar' worse than that.

Replace Walmart with Costco and you've got Idiocracy right here:

Now there's a very un-Pandoran world that treads a very fine line between being hilarious and being downright depressing.

Stand on Zanzibar depicts an overpopulated Earth. A good read.

Since Blade Runner has already been mentioned, how about an old movie which provided architectural input for it? Fritz Lang's Metropolis (1927) shows a highly industrialized world, where the rich live in skyscrapers, enjoying all the pleasures of life, literally on the backs and shoulders of the poor working class living underground, providing the energy and goods for the rich and greedy people upstairs...

The now almost-complete restored version, which had its premiere last year is currently shown again in German cinemas (!) - in my region, it's showing in a small theater next week on Friday and Saturday evening.

Wiggling bare toes,

Third time it's been said now, but I think blade runner is a pretty good opposite to pandora, it's dirty, smelly, polluting and crime-ridden consumerist living at it's best.

Metropolis - yes indeed - it is incredible that one can watch this movie that is closing in on being a century old and find much of the same situation in present day movies. Movies reflect the cultural and social structures of their times and from that, I fear that we are pretty much in a similar situation still (or again). Interestingly the distribution of wealth also reflects that - it is nearly identical to the late 1920ies - with only few people owning most and the majority owning little.

Oh and I see one parallel to Avatar, too - Metropolis was filmed at the very beginning of cinemas, at a time when it was still very new that one could as a regular person go into a movie theatre and watch that. And at the same time its message was clearly against industrialization carried out on the backs of the poor, it was against overburdening wealth on behalf of a few and it had some criticism against too much blind/unquestioned use of technology. Avatar uses the newest medium of our times - 3D-movies and I think it has some ties in the messages it conveys (it is anti-corporate, anti-inequality, anti-opression and also asks things about the appropriate use of technology)

Maybe this is just me, but when I think of a world that is opposite of Pandora, I don't so much think of a post apocalyptic dystopian future...... I think of.....

I googled "futuristic cities" and I decided to go with this. But in essence, when I think of the opposite of Avatar, I don't think of Fallout, I think of Star Trek (sorta). Another good example would be Illium (especially Illium) or The Citadel from the Mass Effect series.

I'd say that isn't a complete opposite - it's full of life, and even has a park in the middle - something some real cities lack.

Edit: Just the same I was probably better off looking for a picture of Illium instead of just "futuristic cities".
