Aww, don't talk to me about formats! I've editing footage from Seattle taken on the iPhone and it show great. I bung it on the timeline and all is fine until it seems to reach a 'critical' number and then refuses to play them. The footage taken on the camcorder works fine though. So I'm busy re-encoding the iphone footage in HD 1080p25 H.264 to try that out.

I wonder if Mr Cameron will lend me a pair of REDs for the next Seattle trip....you know, just to try out for him. I mean, having bought 50 he must have a few spare? Would be cool to film the next one in 3D...

Is there a bunch of letters to indicate Stereoscopic 3D btw?

As in shouldn't 3D 1080p24 have an FPS of 48 ?

I don't know about those acronyms. I probably should.

There are many 3D formats. For example "Side By Side" splits the standard frame in half for the 2 images. so its still a 1080p24 signal for example.

But full dual stream 3D is double the frames. (and double the data-rate ..3Gbps for most signals!) 1080p24_3D ? I don't know.

He is probably going to put camera's around the set like he did with Avatar to locate the dots on the suits in a virtual place.

Lets stay on-topic.
This could be the reason why he bought 50 of them.

As you can see above there are tiny white some kind of bulbs, those are actually camera's that capture all movements of the suits.
This is highly the reason why he bought them.
Or he breaks a lot of them at the set.

50 isn't that many cameras for a big high end production.

Production time is so expensive that you always want spare cameras around.

And gear does fail; and you can't afford to have downtown because of a tech issue like that.

Shooting 3D, that's only 25 rigs. An advanced action sequence can use many cameras; especially one-time effects.

Plus with many units shooting, each with a few spares around. You'd burn up 25 pretty quick on a project where money is no object.

REDs won't work for Motion-Capture cameras. Even when shooting at full speed in lower resolution, the Epic tops out at 120fps IIRC. Mo-Cap camera systems run at thousands of frames per second; and are very very carefully synchronized as a whole system (only one camera is firing at a time in sync with it's Infra-Red LEDs to prevent false readings from the other cameras). They take special hardware from the sensor on out.

Not really sure what James is doing with the EPICs though, as they aren't the cameras used in the Cameron-Pace fusion camera system. I would assume that at this stage it was a technology test.

Cameron-Pace also just took delivery of the very first of a new version of the Arri Alexa; which is a serious camera that, honestly, kick's the RED's butt. Arri has been making movie cameras for decades. They are basically *the* name for film cameras; and the Alexa is one of the top digital cinema cameras in the world.

But the Fusion system on A1 used Sony cameras, not Arri (or RED).

But when you have all the money you could shake a stick at, and the respect of every one else in the industry; you can play with as many toys as you want.

And IBC 2011 just showed us the Sony F65, and a JVC 4K prototype, and RED is preparing to sue Arri, and RED ships SCARLET on November 3rd, and Canon says they have a huge Earth-shattering announcement for the same day, and... Interesting times! This is going to be a grand and fascinating year for video enthusiasts and pros alike, methinks!

404 error. The page wasn't found.
Necroposts are dead posts, very old posts. Often with bad links to images within them.

The F65 is a beauty; saw it in person at the announcement at NAB in April. (James made no mention of it, or any Digi Cinema cameras, at his NAB keynote either.) The thing is a monster though; not so good in a lightweight 3D rig.

Scarlet was cancelled like a year ago. Or did they decide to bring it back?

Indeed. The first SCARLET product will be announced on Nov 3 and will ship this year.

RED has been dragging a 2/3" prototype SCARLET around to the various conferences this year (except IBC). Apparently, production for their fixed-lens version was interrupted by the tsunami in Japan, so there's speculation about whether they'll jump straight into an interchangeable model. Could be great, but could be a lot more $$, too.

Heh, nice to see Jarred still causing trouble.

He's good at getting people excited. Nice guy too. I'm on his staff for another 'user website.

Interesting to see they suddenly are going forward with Scarlet. Last I'd heard (Payed attention ... months ago) was that they had scrapped Scarlet to concentrate on the high end market.
