When I was watching the news last night, the news reader said that The Government announced yesterday plans to take land in the Coromandel, Great Barrier Island and parts of Paparoa National Park on the West Coast out of the protection of schedule 4 in the Crown Minerals Act.
The Government will also spend $4 million looking at potentially mineral-rich schedule 4 land in other parts of the Coromandel and in Paparoa National Park, as well as Rakiura National Park on Stewart Island. This is appalling, I thought that New Zealand, the tiny little island at the bottom of the world, that preaches 'green' is even considering to open up conservation land so that mining companies can rape the land of its natural resources in order to gain a few bucks, the government try and make us feel better by saying "oh we can mine with not much damage to the land" I say thats F***ing B******T, how can they do this, why would they want to? its an absolute tragedy! I will fight the government the best I can, after posting this I will be heading down to my local electorate office and kick some politic ass! Wish me luck!

You should tell them that it's more profitable to have nature than anything else. Ecotourism is a booming business and the amount of jobs ecotourism supports is sustainable and not just temporary, like mining employment opportunities. Hotels, businesses, restaurants, etc. are examples of this kind of business. Import and export these minerals from someplace that doesn't know natural beauty. Leave this earth alone, and you'll see it reward you back if you let the world know that this piece of land is for the public and not for private interest. Plus nature is a step above many of the valuable resources in this world.

There is 190 billion dollars in those hills, remember that. Hey I'm all for the environment but the eco-system is broken, beyond 'natural' repair. Lets just rape the environment for all its got left, at least go into the perfect storm with a smile on our faces so to speak.

I'm not sure what the exact status of a national park is in New Zealand, but here in the US it is the highest classification of protection, and is pretty much beyond reach for any sort of exploitation. I can tell you that the day that destructive mining or something of that sort is allowed in, say, Yosemite or Yellowstone, I will be there, with weapons.
