Five minutes of incoherent babbling later.

This is all no argument against Avatar. Is JC expected to have read every single comic, every book including unpublished ones (usually unpublished for good reasons), watched every film ever?

Was SW the first piece of fiction to feature swords made of something that isn't actually a substance? No. Was LOTR the first to feature elves, orcs (even if not by name), magic, etc? No.

I believe the argument is that JC is expected not to use cliches so extensively and so shallowly. Lord of the Rings possibly used cliches, sure; but Tolkien wrote books about every single one of them, with such depth and "osmosis value" that he essentially (re)wrote the genre for all his successors.

As good as Avatar is, I doubt that's going to happen.

I mean the "Ohnoes, JC is ripping off [insert film]"-type arguments, which I presumed HNM was talking about.

FAR inferior yet still popular films already have, for numerous genres, as well as a moderately inferior TV series.
