Default "Avatar" shown as Easter movie on German free TV... why I won't watch it!

Yes, actually, there is one instant when I won't watch our favourite movie...
German free TV channel RTL is showing Avatar as the prime-time Easter Sunday movie tonight... so far, so good, one might think, having a pro-environment and anti-greed motion picture on this holiday weekend... however: seeing the TV guide, giving the overall length as "200 minutes", it is quite clear, that the message of our beloved favourite is going to be spoiled by about half an hour of commercial breaks.

This is sad... very sad only!

I'd join in watching Avatar tonight... but only by watching my Collector's Edition full-length extended version without any commercials spoiling the experience.

Happy Easter,

Wiggling bare toes,

I agree with you Txim Asawl, we took the flat screen plasma TV and disconnected it from the antenna, followed by taking down the antenna about ten months ago. The TV is now hard wired into the DVD player ONLY. We don't feel like we are in any way deprived.

Because of this I won't watch it. Even if I'd watch it in HD, my Blu-Ray will always offer better quality, so screw this and screw RTL in general.

Happy Easter anyways

For the love of Pepsi®. I swear to Febreeze™ that it's impossible these days to get rid of advertisements completely.

Maybe this is so people that don't own a copy can watch it?

My favorite public broadcasting station when I was in Germany, and the remembrance of which still brings back happy memories was "Bayern Drei" Radio. It is what was on the radios in all my cars.

TV broadcasters have to make money somehow.

That's why they don't have to charge you simply to view, you just have to snooze through 30 minutes of commercials.

I know, but the LAST thing that anyone needs, it to be in a very important part of the story, and have it interrupted by mindless commercialism.

I've found a combination of a freeview box (which is a one-time fee) and a DVR works very well.

Actually, in Germany, people are charged to watch TV, since PBS stations are funded by monthly fees. These fees are charged by the GEZ, the "Gebühreneinzugszentrale". So, if the PBS stations had made a higher bid, when buying the TV rights to show "Avatar" than RTL, the movie could have been shown without commercials...

Arrgh, I just watched the special on the movie "Battleship"... and now it's yesterday evening's re-run of "Avatar" just starting... for curiosity reasons, I will stay with it, and see, where they place the first commercial break... perhaps the placement will be ironic, right after some scene criticizing greed and turbo-capitalist behaviour...

By the way: on a German web-forum, where barefooters discuss their experience, one user posted about "Avatar" as a pro-barefoot movie shown on TV... of course I replied to that. The thread is here, if you wish to read it:

Topic wegen BARFSSIGER (?) Aliens: Heute (Ostersonntag) "Avatar" in RTL ab 20:15 Uhr - Hobby? Barfu! - Forum

A DVR would come in handy in situations like that.

Not watching a movie because of commercials.

We've reached a new low, I'm pretty sure.

Half an hour isnt bad.. Over here in Sweden it would probably be 1 to 1 and a half... Depending on the channel.. But still, i would never watch avatar on tv if it had commercials, would just ruin it for me. So i'll just stick to the blu ray when i watch avatar.
